Getting Started

What’s the key to winning a 100 meter sprint? Getting out of the blocks fast! You have to know how to start so that you don’t find yourself behind the pack. That’s what I want for all of you who are part of teamRIPPED and attempting to begin your race to a healthy, fit body!

If you are reading this, CONGRATULATIONS! You have decided to take control of your health and fitness, and you are ready to get MAX results! I have learned a lot about how to get MAX results, I’m living proof of what MAX results look like, and I’ve helped many others to get MAX results of their own using many of Beachbody’s workout programs.

So, where do you start?

First, Choose a workout program and get a Coach!

You may have already done this. If so, perfect! Move on to step 2. If not, be sure you make me your coach. It’s free, doesn’t cost you a dime, and entitles you to be part of teamRIPPED so that we can help you every step of the way on your journey to reach your fitness goals. Do that by clicking the “Join Our Team” tab.

You may be trying to decide which program is for you. There is something for everyone. You can start with something like 10 minute trainer or Slim in 6. You can go for an extreme workout like P90X or Insanity. You can go for an absolutely INSANE workout program like P90X2 or Asylum. Or you can do something in between like Pump, Power 90, Chalean Extreme, or Turbo Fire. Look in the “programs” tab at the top of this website to learn all about the different options you have. And read this article as well = “Finding the Right Workout Program”.

For some of you just deciding to commit your time and money to a workout program is all you can handle for now.  I totally relate!  I was the same way.  If that’s you, just pick a program and start there.

However, for those of you who like to get all your ducks in a row from the start, there is a way to SAVE MONEY by ordering a bundle that includes your fitness program, your supplements, and a VIP club membership, along with free shipping on everything, for a much reduced rate.  That is called a “Challenge Pack”Read more about how to order your own Challenge Pack by CLICKING HERE.

Also, read more about how you can cash in on your results with the “Beachbody Challenge”.

Second, determine the equipment you’ll need!

If you choose a workout program like Insanity or Turbo Fire, you won’t need anything except a way to play the DVD’s and something to wipe up all the sweat. With a workout program that involves resistance training (like P90X, Power 90, and Chalean Extreme), you’ll need some dumbbells or resistance bands. I personally prefer dumbbells, but bands work well too. You’ll need an assortment of sizes since the exercises vary so much. On some exercises you can lift a lot of weight, and on others you’ll need very light weight. You can get an assortment of individual dumbbells or you can get a single set of adjustable dumbbells like those made by Bowflex or Powerblocks. For P90X you’ll need also need a pullup bar (or again you can use the bands to substitute). There are also lots of other nice pieces of equipment you might want to add (not necessary but nice to have), which you can look at in the “gear” tab. My favs are the Chin Up Max, Power Stands, and Jump Mat.

Third, document everything!

You never know if you’ll be in the next infomercial (like I was!) or in the next set of workout videos that come out (like I was)! I thought it was silly to take Day 1 pictures that I figured only my wife would ever see. Little did I know how much my body would change, and luckily I had those Day 1 pics as proof. Be sure you take good pictures, document your progress with photos, and take measurements along the way. Read these articles for tips = Measuring Body Fat and Photo Tips.

Fourth, learn everything you can about nutrition.

The level of results you get is in DIRECT PROPORTION to the effort you put into the nutrition. So many people neglect this area. But not us! Part of why I got such great results was that I paid such close attention to my nutrition. I was fanatical about it. Most of our Hall of Fame transformations followed my same approach. And while it may seem tedious to study up on it, it’s every bit as valuable as the workouts to giving you the transformation you are after. I’ve written TONS and TONS about nutrition, and I’ve cataloged the most important of those articles into a single resource, the NUTRITION ALL-IN-ONE. Take the time, read it, and give yourself the best chance at success! I can guarantee that if you’ll follow the nutrition approach I teach here, your results will be off the charts!

Fifth, make a plan to PLUG IN!

It’s so important to be part of a team when taking this journey. A team will help hold you accountable. A team will keep you motivated. You will become more passionate about your journey as you share it with others. That’s one of the best things about teamRIPPED — we provide each other with the support, encouragement, and kick in the rear that we all need sometimes. Read more about how to really PLUG in with these articles = “TAP IN” and “Power Source”. And be sure to visit our Forumto engage with others.  There are several Facebook groups we have for our team depending on what workout program you are doing.  Don’ t sit back and fall through the cracks.  PLUG IN!!

Sixth, know that it won’t be easy.

These workouts are HARD! Eating right is HARD! Breaking old habits is HARD! You won’t like it at first. You’ll be sore. You’ll be tired. You’ll feel like crap some days. Suck it up and push play! That’s the key! We all go through the same thing. Successful people push through and keep going. Quitters quit. You have to make the commitment that no matter how you feel, you will keep showing up and keep pushing yourself to improve! These articles shed the light on what you will go through and how to have your mind right = “Struggling”, “Just do it Period”, and “How do you feel?”

Seventh, set big goals and land your spot in my teamRIPPED Hall of Fame!!

I kept pushing myself every day, and got awesome results. If you’ll do the same, there is no reason you won’t do the same. Your road may look different than mine, but if you are taking steps every day to get yourself closer to your goal, I can guarantee that you will get there! People ask me when I started seeing results, or they get worried if they have ups and downs in their weight loss along the way. I’ve written about both of those topics = “Seeing Results?” and “Ups and Downs”.

But put all the doubts and fears aside, and set your goals BIG! Then have a single-minded focus on getting to those goals! Be “Fanatical”! And I’ll save you a spot in my teamRIPPED Hall of Fame and my teamRIPPED Before / After Gallery just for you!

Just like Usain Bolt in the Olympics, I expect to see my teamRIPPED peeps blowing everyone away as they hit the line!

Bring it!

  4. Coach Wayne says:

Look out everyone … MIKEY IS BACK!!! Welcome back bro!!! No more free falling for you! Stay on the ground!

  5. Kale says:

I am kind of new at the home work out scene but am in shape from gym workouts. just wondering do most people do insanity and p90x at the same time or should you choose one or the other? I see a lot of posts about people saying moving on to p90x and insanity.

  6. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Kale, I’d recommend you start with P90X by itself first. Check out my article “P90X or Insanity” for many reasons why. Later you can consider mixing things up by incorporating Insanity.

  7. Ahmed ashraf says:

hey coach i really liked your article , in addition i was amazed when i saw your results i hope i’d be like you. next year ill go to college and am fat. Moreover i dont have a credit card to order programs like “p90x” any suggestion?

  8. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Ahmed, the only way to order over the internet is with a credit card so no, I don’t have any suggestions …. except to get one, or to get a debit card from your bank so that you can use it to order things needing a credit card.

  9. jeremy says:

hey coach wayne instead og loseing weight with p90x i am gaining weight. i also want to build muscle should i do the lean schedule or clasic

  10. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Jeremy, definitely go with Classic.

  11. jeremy says:

    thanks coach wayne

  12. jeremy says:

when is the best time to weigh your self

  13. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Jeremy, the best time is first thing in the morning, once a week on the same day (maybe day 7 of each week), and try to keep your diet consistent so that you don’t have much weight fluctuation due to water retention from diet changes, etc.

  14. joey says:

hey i am doing p90x to lose weight but im ganing weight so is there anything that i can do diffrent in the workouts

  15. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Joey, if you are gaining weight rather than losing weight, it’s not the workouts — it’s the diet. You need to run a calorie deficit if you want to lose weight. Read the article “round 1 diet” in my nutrition all in one to learn more = http://teamripped.com/my-nutritionsupplements/nutrition-all-in-one

  16. joey says:

and this goes back the the nutrition i didint get a nurtition guide

  17. Coach Wayne says:

Didn’t get a nutrition guide? Every copy of P90X that Beachbody sells comes with a nutrition guide and workout guide. The DVD’s are rather worthless if you don’t have the right plan for how to use them and how to fuel your body correctly to get the benefit of the workouts. That’s why Beachbody doesn’t just sell DVD’s — they sell the kit with the DVD’s and guidebooks.

  18. joey says:

is there anyway i can buy one on beach body or amazon

  19. Coach Wayne says:

Where did you get the DVD’s Joey? If you bought them from BB, yes they will get you a new guide. If you have fake / burned copies, they aren’t going to help you out. Basically, it’s the “you get what you pay for” thing, and if you paid for the real workouts you’ll get all the customer support in the world from BB, but if you tried to save a few bucks with pirated DVD’s you are on your own and you can contact the person you bought them from to see if they can help you out.

  20. joey says:

off of a freind that he lost it didint think it wasint that bad for 50 bucks

  21. joey says:

    lost the guide

  22. Coach Wayne says:

Then your friend can contact BB and they will have all his info and can get him another copy of the guidebook (as long as he bought it from BB).

  23. joey says:

ok thanks i will see if he will look around for it if he caint find it i will just ask if he will call bb. thanks couch

  24. joey says:

if i dont fallow the netriton guid but still wach what i eat would i still get reasalts

  25. Coach Wayne says:

Will you still get results? Some. Will you get great results? Definitely not! Read this = http://teamripped.com/can-i-look-like-you
(just gotta be honest — there is no point in me telling you that you’ll get great results if you are planning to neglect a huge part of the program — the Nutrition).

  26. Chad says:

What’s up everyone? I just joined the site and am excited to have the support of Coach Wayne and the rest of teamRIPPED. I am waiting for my program to be delivered this week and am reading as much as I can to get prepared. One quick question, what method are people using to determine fat%? I’ve read a lot of different articles about how the calipers are very inaccurate and depend greatly on the person doing the test. Are there other inexpensive methods that are accurate and accessible? Thanks.

  27. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Chad! The calipers are probably the MOST accurate (other than getting dunked in water LOL).

I wrote an article about it not too long ago = http://teamripped.com/how-to-measure-b-f

You are right though that it’s important to reduce operator error. The best way to learn proper measuring technique is to watch a few youtube videos on “skin fold body fat testing” to see how and where to pinch, how far to pull the skin, and where to position the calipers for the most reliable, duplicable measurements.

  28. jake says:

hey I’m a teen looking to start p90x. any tip or advice before i start?

  29. jake says:

oh ya! I almost forgot… is there any special equipment I should have?

  30. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Jake, the same tips that apply to adults will apply to you. Dial in the diet, plug in for motivation, and bring it every day.

Your metabolism may be higher than an adult, so you may find that you need more daily calories than an adult your size, but you’ll only know that after you get going. Adjust the calories as needed after a couple weeks.

  31. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Jake, read the second section in the article above that says “Second, determine te equipment …”. It spells it all out for you :-)

  32. Saul says:

    Coach,
Is it okay to perform the main workout in the morning and ab ripper X at night on those days when ab ripper is part of the routine?
Or would you consider that cheating?

Day 3. Nutrition is looking better (calorie and percentages…Ready to continue bringing it!!!

  33. Coach Wayne says:

Absolutely Saul, that’s fine. You can do ARX anytime (before, immediately after, much later but on the same day). Just be sure you do it! Keep bringing it!

  34. Saul says:

    Thanks for your responses coach

  35. Max says:

Hey coach! I just finished my day 1 workout of P90X. The truth, it was hell, I hated it but I loved it. Now I understand how people get results fast. Its hard work, I took many breaks and even got frustrated by not being able to do some of the moves but i’ll eventually get better. I sticked to it and sucked it up. I just have one question. By half of the video I started to feel very nauseous and light headed. Is this normal?

  36. Coach Wayne says:

That sounds about like Day 1 for me and everyone else! Keep pushing play and you’ll be amazed at how fast your body whips into shape!

  37. Ethan says:

    Hey Coach!
Whats your opinion on how often to weigh during round 1 of p90x? Did you do once a week, bi-weekly, daily? Just curious..

  38. Coach Wayne says:

I did it once a week Ethan. Same day of the week, first thing in the morning when I woke up.

  39. Mike says:

    Hi Wayne,
Similarly to other people, I bought p90x a few years back but unfortunately my motivation/determination would always dip after about 3 weeks so I never did a full 90 days at all, it was always broken segments (and if I’m being honest, it was lackluster).

That said, when I saw x2 was coming out, I convince myself now is finally the time where I change myself physically to where I want to be. I now own both programs, but was wondering what your thoughts are on if I should start with p90x or p90x2? Part of me really feels like I am doing myself a disservice if I do not do p90x first, but I’ve heard the new videos for x2 are amazing.

Also have a question about diet. I’m 5’11 and 156 lbs with around 11% body fat. I’d like to eventually be like 170-175 with 6% or so body fat, should I be on the fat shredder diet?

  40. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Mike, yes I’d advise you to do P90X first and graduate that before moving on to P90X2. X2 is awesome but you’ll do yourself a favor to get the foundation of P90X under your belt with a successful round.

If you are 5% away from your body fat goal, then yes, you need to be on a fat shredder diet. To learn more, look at my “dialing it in” article in the nutrition all in one = http://teamripped.com/my-nutritionsupplements/nutrition-all-in-one

  41. Ethan says:

    Hey coach!
p90x just came in the mail..diet and workouts start tomorrow!! I’m pumped!!

  42. Mike says:

Thanks for the response Wayne! For my weight and body fat, would the 1900 calorie diet be around the right amount I should be consuming? Will be joining team ripped soon, can’t wait!

  43. Coach Wayne says:

Yes Mike, that would be a great calorie target to start with, and adjust from there depending on how your body responds.

  44. joey says:

could you do a little cardio with some workouts like to do for extra

  45. Coach Wayne says:

Sure Joey, you can always do extra cardio if you have the time and the energy.
