Q & A from the teamRIPPED Nation
Q: “I would love an article about “the right shoes” as Tony says. It has happened to me many times that I go to the store and the person who is helping me doesn’t know which are the running shoes and which are the training shoes. So I can say that to this day I don’t know if I’m using the right shoes. Also, would it make any difference to use, for example basketball shoes? Which ones do you use coach?” – Alex B.
A: For me, I really like cross trainers. I have a big and wide foot, so personally I have found New Balance to make some great shoes. When Tony talks about the right shoe, he is really looking for something with lateral suppert. Some of the guys talked a little about shoes with Tony in California. He had commented on a great pair my buddy Brian N. was wearing. Those were actually men’s volleyball shoes. It made a lot of sense. Think about the movements someone playing volleyball would have to make. They have to be able to move in all directions quickly and jump repeatedly. The shoe designed for volleyball would be great to use in the P90X, X2, X3 type of workout. Basketball shoes would also seem to be a good pick by that logic. Lots of lateral stability and great for jumping.

Q: A quick one from Mike T… “Selecttechs or PowerBlocks?”
A: Let me start by saying you won’t go wrong either. Those are both very quality dumbbells. I have owned both, and for me, I preferred my Selecttechs. They were faster to change weights between and that proved to be the most important for me in most of my workouts. The Powerblocks have a big advantage though of being expandable.
I have TONS more on this topic too, as I have blogged about it in the past, check out: Adjustable Dumbbells
Q: “What are your thoughts for the studies on high protein diets and kidney disease?” – Austin F.
A: I really don’t know any studies that show that. It is true that people with kidney disease often get put on low protein diets. But with healthy kidneys, that will not be an issue. I am relying on people much smarter than me, like Dr. Layne Norton. I think the best thing to link to one of his VLogs. It’s one of the BEST videos on protein I have ever watched. Dispels a lot of myths.
Q: What is your favorite leg work out or routine? – Nina
A: Favorite leg workout?! I always have to get pumped up for legs like most people LOL. I think the two BEST are from Body Beast: Build Legs and Bulk Legs. I think Build Legs is a bit harder but both are very challenging and great workouts!
Q: Favorite workout playlist or single track that gets you motivated. – Nina
A: I like a lot of different music. Some of my favorite bands are artists are: Pillar, Skillet, Lecrae, Tadashii, Toby Mac, and 116 Clique. Those are some of my favorites.
Finally, well not really a question but a great reminder from a teamRIPPEDer Kent:
Coach, how about reminding the team ripped of the importance of annual doctor checks.
Everyone spends a lot of time working out and eating right but they need to ensure they are medical fit, especially if they have any family history of medical issues.
I just found out I have prostrate cancer but luckily due to annual check ups it was caught early.
Thank you Kent for that reminder. It is EXTREMELY important to still get into your doctor regularly. If something feel off, get in and get it looked at. Be smart and play it safe. My advice has never been medical advice and I always encourage you to see a professional. I can help you get more pull ups or dial in your macros, but make sure you are taking care of your complete health by also seeing a doctor for physicals and check ups.
Thanks again for all the questions. These were just a few quick ones that I had previous posts on as well. More to come! And if you want to ask me to look into something, just put a suggestion in the “Box” :-)
