It’s Halloween, All Hallow’s Eve, Reformation Day, Fall Festival Day, or whatever it is that you celebrate today.  But no matter what persuasion you go with for today’s events, there is a common thread — JUNK FOOD!

I find it very ironic that our culture has decided that one of the best ways to “treat” ourselves is with junk food.  Almost all of our celebrations, holidays, and milestone events are accompanied by gluttonous portions of unhealthy food.  Why is that?  It’s quite an odd indulgence if you think about it.  We “treat” ourselves by overstimulating our appetite and taste buds, only to feel completely miserable later.  When we think of trick or treating, tailgating at the game, or Thanksgiving dinner, we think of how good that food will taste as we swallow it down.  We don’t even stop to consider that feeling of laying on the couch later, with our stomach churning, full of gas and indigestion.  We don’t think about how miserable we are as we try not to let our flatulence clear out the room or how we try to hold in our churning bowels until we get home to the privacy of our own bathroom to let it go.  It’s MISERABLE!  It’s TORTURE!  I am just keeping it real, because it happens to all of us.  I used to live that way!

Trust me, it’s no TREAT!  It’s a TRICK!  Your appetite will trick you.  It makes you focus on immediate gratification of the taste of a sweet, sugary, salty, fried, or fatty food.  Your appetite tries not to remind you of how NASTY you will feel 30 minutes after your gluttonous indulgence.  It’s not worth it!  Don’t get tricked!

And we aren’t even talking about the long term effects of this trick!  We are more obese as a nation than we have ever been.  Our kids, for the first time EVER, are expected to live SHORTER lives than our generation because of the rampant spread of inactivity and obesity.  We live not only shorter lives, but much less fulfilling lives because we are slaves to our immediate appetites.  We are fat and self conscious, we are tired and run-down, we are sick all the time, we have zero energy to do anything fun, and we are on meds for all our ailments.  THERE IS A BETTER WAY!

So when you have everyone telling you that your “health obsession” is no fun and that you are missing out, remember that they are speaking from the perspective of a warped American culture of gluttony and laziness.  It’s not their fault … they may just not know any better.  Take the time to show them that you aren’t missing out on anything.  In fact, you are enjoying a lot more fulfilling life of health, energy, confidence, and freedom than they are by going with the flow and stuck in their rut.  Be an inspiration to them!

These next 2 months are tough.  We will be bombarded with people trying to knock us off track.  Know that ahead of time.  Visualize how you will respond to the attacks that you KNOW are coming.  Don’t let it be a surprise.  Be ready to respond in a way that shows you are confident, content, and perfectly happy to do it the right way despite their efforts.  Don’t get in arguments.  Just be steady in your resolve to enjoy a healthy, fulfilling life.  You aren’t a slave to junk food, and you aren’t a slave to peer pressure.  Press on toward your goals!  Those who mock you now will be calling you on Jan. 1st when they decide it’s time to lose the 15 lbs they’ve gained over these next 2 months LOL!

Bring it!
