Motivating Others

Over the past couple years, I’ve posted a lot about motivation … because I know how important it is to stay motivated.

I get a lot of motivation from the amazing transformations of others who have ROCKED it.  And that’s what the teamRIPPED Hall of Fame is all about — highlighting the results of others to keep you pushing play and working to be your own Success Story.

I have tried to be motivating to each and every person that comes to teamRIPPED for help. It is rewarding to be able to encourage and motivate someone when they are seeking you out. But what about the people around you that aren’t asking for help? You see exactly where you were, just a short while ago, in that other person. You know how much better life would be if they made a change, but what should you say? Should you say anything? Should you not do anything and just keep all of your new found energy and life to yourself? My answer to that last question is no, but with a little caution.

Here are just a few ways to be motivating to those people around you:

  1. Be genuinely excited about your fitness.
  • You aren’t going to win anyone over or inspire them if you are super negative and always talk about how hard and inconvenient everything you’re doing is. Sure it is hard work, but it is far more rewarding and fun! Don’t be fake either. Being obnoxiously excited will turn people away too. If you are even thinking about motivating others you probably are the right type of excited. Just be yourself.
  1. Listen to the people around you.
  • You want to have good relationships with the people around you so that you will have the privilege of speaking into their lives. Listen to what they are struggling with. Have them talk about what they are doing in their diets. Allow them to share about their fitness endeavors, and don’t shut them down if they start talking about Crossfit or BodyByVi! ;) No nutritional wars or workout battles, just listen. We are all on the same team of weight loss and fitness! And your results will speak for themselves.  Plus, as you learn more about them, you will be in a better position to offer help in the areas they need it.
  1. Be consistent and creditable.
  • If you have been sharing about working out with P90X everyday, tracking your food, and changing the way to eat, DON’T BLOW IT BY BEING A HYPOCRITE! When that cakes comes around the office, pass. I’ve shared about how I may eat non-typical foods once and a while for a little cheat, but don’t be a stumbling stone for those around you. When you have a close relationship with someone, you could take the time to explain how you’ve worked that treat into your goals that day. Or even share how long you went without any cheats (180 days for me!). But when they see you eating that cake without any explanation, they will draw their own conclusions. “He doesn’t practice what he preaches.” Or “see I can eat this and it is no big deal!” All your creditability has gone down the drain.

If people see that you honestly care and really want to help they will come and ask for your advise. It may take some time, but you won’t have to push yourself on them. Tony Horton gave this caution, “The worst kind of advice you can give is the kind of advice that was never asked.” (Thanks Mike Roberts for recording that quote from Summit!) Once they ask, then talk openly and honestly about the great things you’ve been able to do with P90X, Insanity, Shakeology! Answer their questions, help them find answers when you don’t know. Keep growing that relationship, and before long, you’ll have someone to talk about pterodactyls with or a new fellow ‘X’er to tell you to BRING IT!

Coach you mean "NO" difference ?

Typing too fast again! Yes Jordan, "NO" difference at all. Sorry about that!

Coach, Great article. This is so important to know how to motivate others and bring people to a healthier lifestyle without coming off too pushy. I struggle with trying to pour out all the knowledge I've acquired over the past 5 months about nutrition and fitness onto someone in the matter of minutes. It doesn't work. It just sounds like blah blah blah. Lol. Like you said....Letting them come to you is key.

Coach , is there a difference by doing ARX after the lifting or later ? do i have to do it right after the lifting workout?

Jordan, do difference at all. Just make sure you don't skip it all together!

Thanks Coach Wayne!! Dude I've rocked it hard for 3 weeks and am on my first 'rest week'...Thanks for all your listning! It really has made the difference for me! I declare that at my 90 days I'll be one of your best! Talk to you soon! I look forward to that conversation... Again...Thank-you!!

Great post CW! I hadn't thought about "giving advice" without asking for it. It all makes total sense when you think about it. I've also found that everyone is a diet expert if asked. I've heard about so many funky diets that I just have to laugh!

Freddy LOL! Yeah everyone has something to say about food, but results speak!

Ok then sir. I will difinetly get creatine. Thanks. Any specific brand or type of creatine you suggest ?

Khaled, I would go with bulk creatine monohydrate. Look for Creapure if you can find it (it will be on the back of the label - it's the German manufacturing company that produces the creatine). GNC would be a good place to look for a bulk tub.

I am not knowledgable in the supplements field sir. So what you see best I'll do. What do you say I should get for best results ?? Or am I fine with just what I have and some spinach after workout ??

Khaled, I would stick with Shakeology, whey (to hit protein budgets), and creatine. Maybe some BCAAs or a preworkout, but those are both optional.

ok sir, but still, what else do i need, just creatine ?? and what about glutamine ?? and what about a preworkout ??

Khaled, you can get a lot of glutamine naturally from spinach. For a pre-workout, that is totally up to you. I have used a lot in the past, but don't really use them anymore. Good picks are 1MR, NanoVapor, or E&E.

Hey coach, I was supposed to Do Chest Shoulders and Triceps this morning but family friends ended up sleeping over last night and they slept in my basement (which is also where i workout) so i'm not doing it in the A.M. but i will get it done today. Is this alright? Does it ever happen to you that your morning workout can't be done?

Josh that is totally fine. Just get it in and your are golden! I think it happens to everyone now and again.

Hey Coach. This is exactly what I am going through right now. People see the changes in me and I try to explain to them what I'm doing and they always ask "Is it hard? Will I be working out all day?" LOL I tell them I workout 1 to 1.5 hours a day. That's it! Get home from work and press play while my son watches and sometimes trys to join in. It's doable. I'm trying to motivate my boyfriend, but he's excited about it then the excuses start to come out. LOL Oh well. I will get him on the wagon one day. Thanks for all the motivation that YOU provide!

Its a great quote Wayne. And it is something I needed to hear!

Thanks again Michael!!

Great article. It's definitely something to work on daily.

Great post coach, Not being a hypocrite will not only help your credibility, but your own results as well......... Way to bring it!!!!!!!!

I am in the US now sir. Great article sir. I got my shakeology, and i got whey isolate and a fat burner. what else do i need in my supplements sir ?? (other than creatine, cause it does exactly the opposite of the fat burner). And is Xander with you guys yet ??

Khaled, those are all great picks! Creatine is not really the opposite of a fat burner. It doesn't change fat loss at all. It may cause you to retain some water weight, but fat loss is not changed. No Xander yet!

Calvin & Hobbes - classic!!! Subtle...:)

Amazing post Coach! Very well said!

Wayne, This question is random but my wife is due in October with our first child. She's interested in doing shakeology after and we are wondering if it's safe for breastfeeding or if there is any info you can provide me on this?

Hey Jordan, I know women that have used it while breastfeeding, but it is best to check with you doctor.
