Quite a narcissistic title of an article, huh!!?? Well, stay with me, because there’s a point to this ….
I get a lot of YouTube comments on my transformation video that start with “Can I look like you?”. Usually, though, the sentence doesn’t end there. It usually is more like this:
“Can I look like you …. IF …. I don’t follow the nutrition plan?”, or “Can I get results like yours …. IF … I don’t take the supplements?”.
Well, those questions are easy to answer. NO! I got some of the best 90 day results ever with P90X because I pushed myself to the extreme. Not only on the workouts but with extreme effort and detail on the nutrition, and extreme precision on the supplements. It’s silly to expect those kind of results without that same level of discipline and attention to detail. So if you are asking whether or not you can get the best results ever while slacking in areas of the plan, the answer is a definite NO!
However, there is also another question I must address. What if you DO stick to the diet as tightly as I did? What if you mimic my supplements? What if you never skip a workout and never have a cheat meal? Then, can you “look like me?”.
Well, that’s not an easy answer! It’s not a definite NO! But there are multiple factors at play into the equation.
And that’s just for starters. So why do I bring this up? Because so many people seem to be pre-occupied with wanting to look like someone else instead of looking like the best version of THEMSELVES! I didn’t set out to look like someone else. I just set out to look like the best version of me! I wanted to get ripped, strong, and healthy. And that should be your goal too. I had people I tried to emulate (most specifically my coach, Josh Spencer). And we should emulate people who have success doing what we want to do. So if you’d like to follow in my footsteps and get awesome results, I’m here to support you all the way with everything I’ve got!
But let’s remember that God made each of us different and we should rejoice in what makes us special. Y’all may think I’ve got great pecs or shoulders, but I guarantee you no one asks if they can have hair like me! LOL!
The teamRIPPED Hall of Fame is full of people who look nothing like me! But they look AWESOME!! Maybe even better than me! Instead of comparing ourselves to each other, we all have the same goal — to be the best Wayne (or Paul, or Mike, or Chris) as we can be!
You be the best YOU that you can be! I guarantee you’ll look awesome! And you’ll LOVE the way you look and feel! Then you’ll have to start answering the same question from your friends and neighbors … “Can I look like you if…..?”
I am currently eating at 1800 calories a day and while I am not following a specific plan from p90x I AM eating healthy foods “whole grains, fruits, veggies etc”. Is that something that could stop me from progressing?
Also, my supplements consist of casein protein before bed and the occasional pure protein bar
Hey Syler, “eating healthy” often leads to much poorer results than actually developing a plan and sticking to it. Read my “nutrition all-in-one” article, especially the link to the “nutrition guide” article, for more. Your supps are fine, but you’ll want to put in some effort to dial in the nutrition in order to get XTREME results!
Ok, looking at the fat shredder plan, if I add up all the calories excluding the condiments and what not, I am at 1680 out of 2200.
Could I use 200 of those calories for more fruits? I am used to at least three pieces of fruit a day and love it. would it do any damage to do it that way?
That’s fine Syler, except that you don’t want your ratios to go out of whack by adding all carbs (fruit is all carbs).
Alright haha one last question, could I possibly use the 3000 calorie plan?
900 protein etc just straight up use the plan with only about 90 calories left for the condiments?
Sure Syler, you can definitely do that!
I will never look like you, cause i have too much hair. BUT, a physique like that would not hurt. LOL
Good morning Coach,
What’s your take on Carb cycling. I’m an Endo and find it extremely easy to drop weight if i drop my calories way low, which is a bad thing. I’ve been trying to stay around 1800-1900 calories. Would it be beneficial to go with a 40/40/20 ratio on lifting days and 50/30/20 on Plyo/Cardio days? Should I drop to around 1600-1700 calories? I’m currently sitting at 230. the first week of Phase 3 I was dropping like 1 pound a day but then it stopped. Would this help shake it up some?
Thanks,
Yes Eric you can try that. But you are right that you don’t want to go too low or drop too fast because you will lose muscle mass. Our goal is to drop fat while preserving muscle mass. My rule of thumb is never go below 1500 cals for a guy and 1200 cals for a lady. Hope that helps!!
This has to be the mist inspirational ariticle I’ve read ..joining team ripped was a great idea..I’m looking forward to being on the hall of fame ..lol..
Hey man jus wanted to get your opinion on sumthin. Im in my 4th round of the X an im making this round and next round mass gaining rounds. Wanted to know If I really needed the recovery weeks or could I jus hit the gym with sum lifting during them weeks??
Hey Billy, definitely do the recovery weeks. Your body needs the time to recuperate from the heavy lifting. That’s part of what fuels the muscle gains. Read my article called “recovery week” for more details.
Ight Man Ill Check It Out, Thankz!
Hi coach just wanting your opinion on creatine. i am starting p90x from next week, i am 5’7 and 172lbs with 24% body fat and from past 8 months i have been working out and have lost arund 34lbs and now with p90x my target is 10% body fat and i want to take creatine with it..but i have heard that i can make u feel plump because of water retention properties..what’s your view coach
Hey Raunaq, creatine can make the muscles retain some fluid (which is how it works — it volumizes the muscles so that they can receive more nutrient flow), but it has no effect on actual body fat. So go for it! I used it in my first round and clearly didn’t have a problem losing body fat. Read more about creatine in my article “the scoop on creatine”.
thanks coach
Hi coach, i will be starting my p90x with BSN NO-Explode and it already has creatine in it. So is it necessary to take extra creatine by adding 1 or 1.5 scoops of any monohydrate creatine powder
Coach you have been a true inspiration. When I started P90X in April 2011 I began searching the web for people who have done the program and the results that have achieved. A couple of months ago I found your site (and your story) and have been hooked ever since. Such a wealth of information, down to earth discussions, and great experiences to learn from. My goal is to be the best I can be….lose the necessary fat (10-15 more pounds) and then start working on muscle building. In the past 6 months I’ve lost ~42 lbs and hope to one day become a BeachBody coach. Just want to say thanks for having this site, and that I’m very happy to be a part of the teamRIPPED community!!
Hey Raunaq, the amount of creatine in NO Xplode is about 2.5-3g, and a normal daily dose of creatine supplementation is 5-10g, so you might want to consider doing the NO Xplode before workouts and then some creatine monohydrate powder at one other time during the day.
Hey Coach Wayne, I finished my first round of p90x on 6/05/11 droped 42 pounds started at 247 at 6’2 and now im down to 205 and feel great. Im still not where I want to be but I feel like a new man. my body fat percentage droped 15% from 35 down to 20 but im still not finished going to start my next round on 6/27/11 getting my hands on a weighted vest. I would like to make a video about my results but i think i’ll have to save that till the end of round 2. Thanks for the motivation and helpful info . For the next round I want to drop 15 pounds of fat and put on 8-10 pounds of muscle . Which one of your diets would you recommend?
Hey Only1! Way to go man! You are rocking it! For round 2, I’d recommend staying on a fat shredder diet until you get the body fat where you want it, then switch your diet for building mass (see my article “body fat vs. bulk” for more on that.
Again, congrats on the progress!
thanks coach! its great to have a site like yours as my goto for all my questions and answers.
I am completely SOLD! Hubby is getting this today. I know I need the pull up bar but do I need weights? I need everything they will be using in the videos. I don’t want to give this to him and he gets discouraged because he doesn’t have everything he needs to participate with the videos. Help..
@Aisah – You (or your hubby) can use the resistance bands but weights yield better results, in all honesty. If there is an Academy Sports near you, they have the LifeSmart adjustable dumbbells on sale right now for $149.99. They go from 5 – 55 lbs. per dumbbell. That is the cheapest you’re going to find any adjustable dumbbells with that much weight, in my opinion. Even the used stuff is more expensive than that! Good luck!
hey coach ,
thanks for the post. instead of trying to be brad pitt fight club ill just be the best i can. im 5’5 190lbs started in november with insanity at 247lbs.i have many health problems ulcerative colitis,(they cycle me on prednisone off and on)inguial hernia fixed that with using bands instead of weights.are my 2 major problems. so my weight went yo yo for a few years. i just wanted to say thanks for all ur posts they help keep me focused and motivated one day at a time.
hey coach, i have been doing a hybrid p90x and insanity with the fat shredder diet, all the articles in here have really helped me. thanks for the info and the motivation
You are welcome Travis!
Hey Coach! hope all is well.
i had a question regarding weighing food .
i use the scale for my meats and my avocados .
i use the measuring cup for everyhting else.this morning i had my typical 1/2cup of oatmeal which is supposed to be 40grams , i weighed it and it was like 65grams , meaning ive been overeating this whole time!
do you use a scale or a measuring cup im thinking about measuring everything from now on , fruits vegies all in grams what do you think
Hey Derek, it’s most accurate to weigh it. That’s what I used to do exclusively. Now that I have a good eye for it, I don’t always weigh anymore but to be safe, that’s definitely the way to go.
so your saying the scale is better then the measuring with the cup? i was taking in roughly 30g of carbs extra .
my 1/2cup wasnt 40g it was 65g
On the things like cereals and oats that can settle, measuring volume instead of weight can lead to errors (as you found).
so how bout vegies and fruits what would you use
You can weigh them too.
hey im 140 pounds and im 16 years old im pretty lean and i have some muscle but im not ripped i have alott of protein at home and creatine and all equipment for p90x what should i eat? and how much for bulking up i dont want a diet to lose weight i want a diet to gain muscle mass can you help me?
Hey George, come look in the “nutrition zone” for ideas of what to eat. I have a bulking diet there if your primary focus is to build muscle. But beware that if you use a bulking diet, you won’t lose any body fat, so be sure your body fat is as low as you want it before trying to build muscle mass.
oh Wayne, i just finished “chest and back’, and its my 2nd week,…man its intense. those “dive bombers’ they look so easy, but they are placed at the end and its killin me, i hate them :))). i get all angry and upset cause cant manage to do more reps on every move due to the intesity >:| please tell me that it was hard for u too. i’m followin your 1900 kcal diet, with proteins and stuff, and i’m 6″ 170lbs, but i’m strugglin like never. tell me it was hard 4 u too :)))
Hey Aram, keep showing up and keep pushing play. It was hard for me too! Read my article “struggling”!
just read the struggling article. i cant believe you did only 1 unassisted pullup, that seems so unreal watching your videos and how you “knock them all day long, if you want to”. maybe you should put a video of your early days, where you were collapsing and struggling, cause everybody uploads videos were they do it all so easy and preety. i think that would be really motivational, comparing pics is fine but to see coaches struggle and fight that would be smth. and another thing: what about legs, man? why is everybody neglecting them(you too)? nobody shows them in pics or videos…
P.S. still waiting for shakeology in europe. thank for everything
Hey Aram! Good point, but unfortunately I can’t go back in time and do a video log of me struggling when I started since I didn’t record myself! Maybe you can so that when you finish and can knock these exercises out with ease, you can show others how you struggled. Good idea!
I don’t neglect my legs. I work them hard at least 2 days per week (Insanity and Plyo work the legs mercilessly for an hour using body weight for resistance, in the same way that pushups and pullups use body weight resistance for an upper body workout). Look in the Forum under the photo gallery and you’ll see pics of me flexing my legs. They are well defined and muscular from all the leg work I do with these hybrid workouts. I would show more pics of them but people don’t really care about leg flexing pics in the world of fitness.
Hope that helps!
Hi Coach Wayne.
I have a friend from Spain who used to be a model there. He got fat from all the food here (he hated most of it, since he was used to a mediterranean diet, fresh food, fish 2-3 times per week, almonds as snack instead of cheetos, etc). He did the P90X program and his results were so amazing! he is all ripped and muscular again,he says he had been like that before, but it took him years of exercise and diets, and 3 months had never given him those results.
The thing is, I am 5’5″ and my body is totally different than his. But he told me something that got me into P90X: “It is not the type of body you have, it is the effort and sacrifice what will really help you. You can be short and still look great, a lot of people are very tall and yet very fat. In many places of Europe, women don’t look at a man’s stature as much as they look at his abs; if he is fit, he’s got a chance.”
I will never look like him since our bodies are so different, but I can work out hard and stick to my goals to look my own very best. The same goes for everyone.
hey coach
im now doing taekwondo what muscle do you think i should workout to punch harder and kick fast. im now a green belt wanting to become a red belt and im going to enter the jr olympics
p.s.
how much calories do you think i should eat while doing taekwondo im 6 feet
Hey Eric, to be a better athlete (which will help you punch harder and kick fast), you need to develop your total body strength, core strength, speed, and coordination. So that means you need to work ALL your muscles! You want to have resistance work and speed work. P90X and Asylum are both good for that.
As for how many calories you should eat, that depends on if you are trying to gain muscle, maintain weight, or lose body fat.
