Staying motivated working out isn’t something that just happens. It takes some planning and self-awareness. But As many of the vets of teamRIPPED will tell you, it can be done!
Staying Motivated Working Out
This post was fueled by a suggestion I got in the TR Suggestion Box a couple weeks ago. I am still working through those and they are great! Thank you for everyone that gave me ideas and questions. If I haven’t hit yours, they are still coming.
How do you keep workouts interesting in the long run? I’m talking about the Beachbody veterans who have been working out for many years with BB programs… Even though BB has a large variety of workouts, watching the same video for multiple rounds and hybrids becomes a chore, so what are some of the things to change it up? No video, add ten seconds to each move, high reps vs low reps, etc. What about doing some stuff besides the BB stuff ie Back/Front squats, running, deadlifts, barbell work, more advanced gymnastics for the crazies, etc. It just seems like there’s so much out there in the fitness world and a lot of BB people, not in a bad way, don’t really venture outside of what’s on the video. -Nathan
I think this is a great one! As fitness and health become a lifestyle for you, you WILL encounter this on your journey.
To workout with the DVD or not?
You will find people on both sides of this question. I have good buddies that have been working out with Beachbody as long as I have and they still pop in a DVD every day. I still use a DVD most days but for me, it depends on my current goals.I have been doing Body Beast for a LONG time now. It is really the program I have grown to like the most. I still love Tony and Shaun T can’t be beat for cardio, but I love lifting. Plain and simple… I can’t get enough of the iron LOL So I stick with Body Beast. Now to keep it fresh and working for my goals, I do change some things. The first being the DVD. Body Beast is actually really fast paced. You might think that because it’s not cardio, it won’t get your heart rate up. WRONG! Throw in Build Legs and don’t touch the pause button :-) So if I am working on cutting, I pop in the DVD and try to hang. That produces an awesome burn and a huge PUMP! If I am maintaining or bulking, I slow it down. A lot of times I will work just from the worksheets and build in more rest. In those cases I am resting to be able to push more weight. Slowing it down allows that to happen.
Changing or Modifying Beachbody Workouts
I have been doing this forever LOL Back to P90X and 1-on-1 workouts. My first addition to those workouts was a weighted backpack and then weight vest. Now adding an olympic barbell and other equipment to Body Beast does basically the same thing. It offers me the ability to do practically the same moves but move more weight not be held back by the size of dumbbells I have or don’t have. That was really why Beachbody included the EZ bar option for Beast. It opens the door to new moves and more weight without breaking the bank. Some of my favorite subs are pretty straight forward: barbell presses in place of dumbbell presses, barbell deadlifts and squats in place of dumbbell movements, etc. I have even used the EZ bar for pullovers in place of dumbbells just to mix it up.
Some changes I have seen others make are modified moves, liked mentioned in Nathan’s original question. Front squats are something a lot of guys sub for a few weeks in place of regular squats. Front squats hit the lower quad more than back squats and can be a good sub. I don’t add many advanced gymnastic moves cuz I’m just not built for that LOL 240# and things like handstands and muscle up aren’t best friends! I still love adding things like some obstacle course race training when I have a race coming up (rope climbs, grip work, etc).
You can also change rep schemes for your goals and what interests you. If one of your goals is to build more strength, try changing the Body Beast rep schemes from 15/12/8 to 12/9/6. That will focus your work still in hypertrophy but add more of a strength element with the 6 rep sets.
Keeping it Fresh!
This is my biggest encouragement. Keep it fresh! Find what interests you and work it into your workouts. That is the awesome thing about hybrids. They open the door to adding new things and keep your workouts fresh. If I only had P90X, 4 years of only Chest and Back would get hard to stay motivated. So find what interests you most and challenge yourself! For me it’s lifting. I want to be strong and healthy! So I’m lifting heavy and paying attention to the all important nutrition.
If you are a Beachbody and teamRIPPED Vet, what do you do to keep it fresh? How do you stay motivated?
