A few days ago, I posted the Hybrid workout routine I will be doing for Round 5. There is a lot of variety with the workouts and programs, so I am really looking forward to it. But I’ve also really been curious about changing my nutrition and supplementation approach in order to be able to accurately evaluate the value of some of the supplements I’ve been using for the past year.
So with that in mind, I will spend the next 4 months going “Simple”! I am going to scale back to what I feel are the truly essential supplements. My diet has always been quite straightforward, so that won’t change much.
I plan on sticking with 3,000 calories per day (my maintenance level), as I seek to remain about 215 lbs throughout this round. I also want to keep my body fat in the 6% range throughout, where it is now. I will keep the diet balanced at 40/40/20, so I will basically be following the same diet that worked so well for me in Rounds 2 and 3 (which you can see HERE). No zig-zagging for me at this point, as I will be more interested in just keeping it simple and “easy” to do.
For supplements, I’m slashing the extras and going with just my essential 3! I will only use Whey protein, Shakeology, and Results/Recovery formula. I’ve enjoyed the fun “extras” like pre-workouts, intra-workouts, and creatine. I’ve also played around with thermogenics and glutamine. But I don’t consider them essential, and I want to see how I do for an extended period without them. I also know that I’ve probably gone a little overboard by taking vitamins and fish oils in addition to my Shakeology and regular lean proteins in my diet, so I’m going to give those up as well.
My daily supplement schedule will now look like this:
1 hour before my workout (which is the moment I wake up since I work out early in the morning) = 1 scoop of whey mixed in water
Immediately Post-workout = Results/Recovery formula
Meal replacement (usually breakfast, but sometimes I might make it lunch instead) = Shakeology with 1 scoop whey and PB2
Before bed = 1 scoop whey mixed in water
That’ll be it. Can I stay as strong without the creatine and preworkout? Can I stay as lean and low in body fat without using any thermogenics? Will my blood work and urine work look good after 4 months on the Simple Plan? These are the questions I want to find out the answers to. My pocketbook will be happy that I take a break from the other supplements, although the guys at GNC might miss me LOL!
My reasoning for giving up the other supplements is that I am confident that although they can help some, I will be able to maintain an elite level of fitness without them. My reasoning for keeping the whey protein, Shakeology, and Results/Recovery formula is that I am confident that just those 3 will provide me everything I need to keep myself at 100% despite a rigorous workout schedule.
I will definitely update you guys on what I’m noticing as I go through Round 5 with a Simple Diet and Supplement strategy. If it goes well, I may just decide to stick with this approach for life — cost effective, healthy, and doesn’t require as much planning.
