Shakeology Taste

I remember how excited I was to get my first bag of Chocolate Shakeology.  I was 1 month into my Round 1 transformation, and I was starting to see results, but I wanted to MAXIMIZE my results and had finally pulled the trigger on Shakeology.  Honestly, I didn’t really care what it would taste like because that’s not why I was using it.  I wanted the health and fitness benefits.

When the bag arrived, I immediately opened it, put a scoop in a glass with some tap water from the sink, stirred it up, braced myself for the magical potion that was about to infuse my body, and ……. YUCK!!!  It tasted like tar!  I thought, “Well, I’ll keep using it for the benefits, but this taste is gonna make it hard to choke down!”

Now in all fairness, it’s important to note that I also hate the taste of dark chocolate and coffee.  Chocolate Shakeology has no artificial flavors, and it gets its natural flavor from actual cocoa beans along with the other ingredients.  I was expecting a taste more like the milk chocolate whey protein powders I use, which use artificial flavors and sweeteners.  So I was a bit shocked!

I took it home and let my wife try it.  To my surprise, she thought it tasted GREAT!  The same mix I thought tasted like tar, she said was delicious!  I’m sure it had to do with the fact that my wife prefers dark chocolate to milk chocolate, and she also loves coffee.

So the reason I tell you guys this story is because Shakeology has a very specific taste, and you may love it or hate it in its plain form.  If you like coffee and dark chocolate, you will probably think it tastes very good.  If you think coffee or dark chocolate are gross, you’ll be like me and feel like you are trying to choke down a tar-mixture!

But don’t worry!  Even if you are like me and are turned off by dark chocolate or coffee, I’ve come up with a recipe that I really love!  I mix 1 scoop of Shakeology with 1 scoop of regular chocolate whey protein and 1 spoonful of natural peanut butter (or PB2 — an all natural peanut powder that saves you a lot of fat and calories and still tastes just like peanut butter).  I mix those 3 ingredients in water (18-21 ounces) and ice (21-26 cubes) and …. YUM YUM!  I have a delicious, filling, shake that tastes like Reeses.

If you would like to try some Shakeology, just click the link on the right of the webpage (or click right HERE) and fill out the secure form.  I’ll send you a sample, along with my recipe sheet.  You can also watch how  I make my recipe on my YouTube Video.

Oh, and I amost forgot to mention the Greenberry flavor.  It is green, and it tastes “green”!  LOL!  I can definitely taste the wheatgrass / veggie flavor, and even when mixed with fruit and juice, it still tastes like a mix of fruit and veggie.  It’s not bad, but it’s not delicious like the Reeses Chocolate Shakeology!  So I definitely recommend chocolate.

I hope this little journey into the world of Shakeology taste helps you know what to expect if/when you try it for yourself.  And if you don’t like the taste of dark chocolate, TRUST ME …. follow my recipe!!

I just got my first bag of Shakeology this weekend and I think it tastes awesome!

    Here’s my recipe:

    1 cup 1% skim milk
    1 scoop Shakeology
    1 cup ice

That’s it, tastes good to me, but of course I like the taste of dark chocolate and coffee too : )

  2. Michael P says:

The chocolate did take some getting used to, for sure. The Greenberry, to me, tastes like alfalfa. When I wasn’t tracking my nutrition, I mixed juice and all sorts of frozen fruit with it – which made it taste AWESOME! But since that’s way too many carbs, gotta stick with the chocolate. Just got my first jar of PB2, it’s awesome :)

  3. Chris M says:

The after taste is what struck me the first few times but now I use a recipe very close to CW’s and I can honestly say I love it. Literally the best tasting thing I consume all day. My wife loved it from the first glass, had did not have the after taste like I did. Yes, she loves coffee.

For those of you that are a little skeptical, trust CW’s opinion and give it a try. Besides, you get a bottom of the bag guarantee!!

  4. Leonard Cole says:

I think the chocolate taste very good plain (I like all types of chocolate but hate coffee). My wife and son like it also. They too add peanut butter to get that reeses taste. I like to add a few drops of mint extract to get that thin mint taste. The greenberry I cannot get used to. But, to each his own!

Note ( I also think the Jack3D Grape Bubblegum tastes good)

  5. Bear says:

I love the taste, but I do love dark choc and coffee so that makes sense.

I make it with milk, water, egg whites, yogurt, cottage cheese, fruit, protein powder all kinds of stuff and love it every way!

When I give others a sample I expectantly wait for them to say “Awesome!” and when they sometimes say “It’s fine.” I’m in shock. LOL

I also put it on my granola (video recipe): http://projectsamson.wordpress.com/2010/12/15/projectsamson-granolaShakeology-snack-recipe/

I love the chocolate taste…I look forward to it every morning. I have my wife using it as well, and she drinks it, which is means she at least doesn’t hate it. I mix one scoop chocolate Shakeology, 1 scoop Chocolate Myofusion, 16 ounces of water, and about 6 ice cubs. It gets my day going right.

For my wife’s shake, I mix one scoop chocolate Shakeology with 8 ounces of Fat Free Skim Milk and 6 ice cubes. The milk makes it much more creamy, and in my view better. However, I don’t want to add the calories to what I currently use.

  7. Shawn says:

I hated the dark chocolate at first and after I got through a bag I liked it a LOT better, I actually started craving the stuff!

Unfortunately since it was so bad in the beginning I called and asked that they send me the berry kind, and it really is BAD.

Now i’m stuck with an unopened bag of berry that I really hate, wishing I had my chocolate back :(

  8. Christian says:

Hey coach Wayne you sent me a sample of the greenberry and i really didn’t like it, is there anychance i can try the chocolate?

  9. Coach Wayne says:

LOL! Sure Christian, just fill out that form again and I’ll send you chocolate. You’ll like it much better!

  10. Diarmuid says:

Hi Coach Wayne. I live in Ireland and ordered P90X recently and I`m starting next Monday. Do you know if Beachbody ship Shakeology to Ireland?

  11. Leonard says:

Hey Coach, I’m in my final recovery week for my second round. Right now I use Shakeology as my post workout drink. In my shake I also mix in 1Tbsp peanutbutter, glutamine, benefiber, whey protein,1 banana and flax seed. I was considering trying the Results/Recovery Formula but I dont want to give up my Shakeology. What would you suggest? Also I’ve been meaning to ask I’ve got a 16 month old that loves to take drinks of my shake maybe 4 or 5. Is there any reason I should not be giving him any?

  12. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Leonard. I used to do the exact same thing as you (use Shakeology as my post workout, made the same way). But when I started using Results/Recovery, I started using Results/Recovery immediately after my workout, then using Shakeology about 45 min later (more of a meal/muscle builder than as a recovery drink). It really made a big difference in my energy and recovery level. Consider trying that yourself.

They say Shakeology is safe for children to drink from age 4, so a couple sips for the toddler is probably totally safe. Don’t give him/her a sippy cup full though! LOL!

  13. Coach Wayne says:

Diarmuid, try calling the 1-800 # at Beachbody and ask for the “international department”. They will be able to answer that (it varies by location so I’m not sure).

  14. Leonard says:

Hey coach, thanks for the reply. If I use the Results/Recovery Formula can I still mix my shake the same way or should I leave out the glutamine. By the way I used your recipe.lol

  15. Ryan says:

I like both flavors, but neither plain. My staples are the Reeses Shakeology that Wayne talks about and a Greenberry Shakeology mixed with natural unsweetened cranberry juice and some fresh berries.

  16. Coach Wayne says:

I have started leaving out the glutamine in mine because the Results/Recovery has some and the whey protein has some.

  17. Mike M says:

I love the product just hate the bag itself. I can never seal the bag back shut without 5-6 attempts.

  18. Coach Wayne says:

I agree Mike! The bag is a hassle to seal. I kept an old Res/Recovery tub that works perfectly for holding my Shakeology. I just dump the bag into the tub every month.

  19. Diarmuid says:

Thanks Coach Wayne. Is it possible to have you as my coach even tho I live in Ireland?

  20. Mike M says:

LOL I’m on HD for both of them…that makes far too much sense. I’m much better off yelling at the bag every morning to see if that changes anything.

  21. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Diarmuid! You can be an “unofficial” member of teamripped, but unfortunately, since teambeachbody is only open in the US right now, there is no way to actually set up your own teambeachbody account with me as your coach. Sorry! But like I said, make full use of the resources here at teamRIPPED, just as if I were your coach. I will definitely let everyone know as soon as the overseas registrations for teambeachbody open up (that’s a huge point of emphasis at Beachbody in 2011).

  22. Diarmuid says:

Thanks Coach Wayne! I really appreciate that!!

  23. Nathan says:

I thought I got a defective bag. Thanks for confirming it is normal. I use a “chip clip” to ensure mine stays closed.

  24. Deanna Bullock says:

I grew up on a farm and Greenberry tastes like what silage smells like to me. However, I’ve made it into a joke that I gotta have my morning silage and then I pour in a tablespoon or two of orange juice so I can drink it. I’ll return to chocolate next month.

  25. Shawn says:

@ Deanna : Orange juice huh? I’ll have to give that a whirl.. I’ve been mixing mine with an apple, a banana and ice/water. It’s drinkable but still something I kind of dread lol.

  26. Coach Josh says:

My parents have the Greenberry, so I wanted to try it…Yuck! I imagine it could be good if you added the right things, but on it’s own I think it’s pretty unpleasant. Fortunately, the chocolate is delicious and I like drinking it each morning.

  27. Tim says:

12 oz fat free milk, 1 scoop chocolate Shakeology, 1 scoop whey protein, 5mg creatine and 9 ice cubes! Perfect….

  28. Tim says:

aren’t you better adding the fat free milk and dropping the natural PB? Caloric intake remains basically unchaged but you are gaining sugar and losing the fat associated with the PB. nOT SURE WHICH IS BETTER????????

  29. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Tim, that depends on the rest of your diet. If you are going over on your fats, then definitely switch the natural PB for skim milk. In my case, I always come in well below 20% on fat, plus I think the peanut butter adds a ton of flavor to the shake. I can’t even tell the difference in taste between milk and water.

But BTW I now use PB2, which gives the same great peanut butter taste at only 23 cals for a spoonful — it’s peanut butter powder and it’s awesome! And all natural. I wrote about it in my blog titled “fat shredder foods”.

  30. Tim says:

    Thanks Wayne

Half way through week 6 and still BRINGIN’ IT….

Weighed in this morning at 218, down from 243 on Jan 26th.

Your articles have been very helpful, especially regarinf nutrition and I am learning that if you pay attention to the detail, you can make things happen. It is not hard – it simply takes some planning….

I saw the PB2 yesterday and have access to it locally but found a new recipe I like

12 oz water – Shakeology, 1 scoop whey protein, 1/2 cup strawberries, 1/2 bananna. YUMMMM

  31. James says:

Today is day 3 of using shakeology (got the chocolate wayne..lol) and i love it, it taste so so, not great but not horrible either, i mix it with my cookies and cream protien powder and it tastes pretty bad ass. But anyways after the first time i used shakeology i could already feel the difference, i felt WAY better, i got way more energy i felt more alert and over all just my body felt good. Today is day 3 and i still just feel good, and i have noticed it has slowly started to help curb some of my bad cravings. I love it, just wish it was cheaper.. saddly being canadian i am not allowed to be a beach body coach so i dont get no discount :( and pay full price which is pain full.

  32. Robert says:

Hey coach Wayne, I requested a sample bag but im not sure if it went through. Do I get an email confirming and how long does it take? Thanks for your time!

  33. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Robert! Yep, I got your request 2 days ago and already sent it out. You should be getting it in a few days. Hope you like it!

  34. Robert says:

    Ok thanks coach!

  35. Chris L. says:

How would one take Shakeology to work to have for lunch? Could you mix it with just cold water in a shaker?

  36. Coach Wayne says:

Yes Chris, you can (they even give you a “Shakeology” shaker for just such a purpose if you sign up for home direct shipment. I prefer to do mine in a blender though for that frosty shake texture. But you definitely don’t have to.

  37. Chris L. says:

Coach, one more question on Shakeology. The stuff sounds great, and when used as a meal replacement, the cost is really not that bad. In fact, running some numbers, I could actually save money by having it for lunch. What concerns me about it, though, is the meal replacement part. I am doing a P90X/Insanity hybrid, with more of a focus on lifting and getting a little bulk. Because of this, I tend to have a few boiled eggs for breakfast with oatmeal, and a protein heavy lunch, usually chicken, cottage cheese and fruit. I am worried that the low level of calories in shakeology will deter from my muscle building. Is there any benefit to having it for breakfast, as opposed to lunch? I always hear not to skimp on breakfast. Lunch would save me the most money, but would be harder from a “social” point of view (everyone tends to go out for lunch). I can get past that though. Just wondering which meal may be better. FYI- I work out at 5 in the morning if that makes a difference. Thanks for your help.

  38. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Chris! Since you are looking to build bulk, you want the nutrients of the Shakeology, but with additional calories. A great way to do that is to mix Shakeology, whey protein, and peanut butter (and even a banana) together so you get a highly nutritious AND big calorie shake all at once. I am not looking to drop any body weight myself, so I mix my Shakeology with a scoop of chocolate whey protein powder and PB2 (or natural peanut butter) to get extra nutritious calories.

  39. James says:

i actually mix my choclate shakeology with a scoop of cookies and cream protien powder with some skimmed milk and a drop or 2 of almond extract or mint extract… SOOOOOO good

  40. Chris L. says:

If you make the Chocolate Reeses recipe with no ice (I am making it at work), how many ounces of water is good to still get a somewhat thicker shake?

  41. Coach Wayne says:

I don’t know Chris! I’ve never made it without ice LOL!

  42. Kyle says:

Coach, first thanks for the sample, I completely sold me on the taste which I love. Bought the monthly bag through you. Strangely enough I mix mine with a Strawberry Whey that I thought would be a good idea to get about a year ago (bad idea, taste not so good). However, with the Shakeology and PB it completely masks the strawberry whey flavor. I actually crave the shakes now which has in turn has given me extra motivation to work out so I can then have my post workout shake!

  43. Dirk says:

would you suggest using almond milk or regular whole milk?

    is one scoop enough,

    hear comes the ultimate question,
can I add some fat free whipped cream :)

  44. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Dirk. 1 scoop is one serving. I recommend water, not milk. And no, you can’t use whipped cream lol

  45. Dirk says:

darn, thought i could get away haha,

has anyone in here ever tried it with almond milk?

  46. Zach says:

Thanks for the sample Coach! The powder smells like cocoa, very pleasant. Your recipe with peanut butter is delicious, tastes like Reese’s Pieces in a drink! I also add a table spoon of milled organic flax seeds for fiber. Today is day 6 of P90x for me, I need to better dial in nutrition.
