Making a YouTube P90X transformation video is often the first thing you want to do when you finish a round of P90X (or any other program for that matter). A YouTube transformation is a great way to share with your friends, family, and the world what you have accomplished. If you’ve fully committed to, and completed, 90 days of P90X, you will have something to share. And you should be really proud of what you get to share!

Basics to a YouTube P90X Transformation Video

So what do you need? Let’s take a look…

1.) Your Transformation Photos

First and foremost, you have to have your transformation photos. You should have been taking them all along as every Beachbody program tells you to do that! Hopefully you’ve followed some of mine and Beachbody’s tips and have good, high-resolution, photos from Day 1, 30, 60, and 90.  You are going to want to use these throughout your transformation video to showcase your progress. If you have really dramatic changes at 30, 60, and 90, use them all. At the very least you will want to use your before and afters. Many times you can make them into a side by side and use that near the end of your video.

*Before photos… DON’T forget about those old before photos either. They may have been embarrassing once, and may still be a little embarrassing, but through in those photos of the ‘old’ you to set the stage for your story.

2.) Video Footage

This is a YouTube P90X transformation video after all, so you need some good video footage!

Set up a tripod or anything stable to rest your camera on and shoot some workout footage. Pick some classic and impressive moves of the program you are doing. For P90X, do some push up variations and pull up variations. You don’t have to show all 45 from your monster sets of push ups, just show a few of each. And make sure to showcase your great form. No slacking on form, this is your highlight reel!

While shooting video, make sure your lighting is good — not too dark and not too blown out. A little overhead lighting helps display your definition too.

ALWAYS SHOOT IN LANDSCAPE IF YOU ARE USING A CAMERA PHONE!!! That will ensure you fill out the whole frame of your video.

3.) Video Editing Software

If you are on a Mac, you have a great program called iMovie. I start with a blank project and use slides, pics, video clips, and text. I am not going to go into a whole tutorial on iMovie. It is really easy to pick up and there are tons of YouTube videos on iMovie that can explain it in more depth. But do your research! You can do TONS with iMovie if you know how to use it.

Likewise for PC users, you can use Windows Movie Maker. I am not as familiar with Movie Maker since I use a Mac, but search for videos on YouTube and I know you will find what you are looking for.

With both, export your finished movies in the highest resolution you can. At least 480p.

4.) Your Camera Choice

Use the best camera you have and set it up for the highest resolution it can capture. You can always upload your video in a lower resolution (like 480p) but you can’t improve your resolution if you don’t get the raw footage in high-resolution.

Most new smart phones will capture video in 1080p. There is nothing wrong with using your iPhone, but make sure you are shooting in HD. A digital video camera, like a FlipHD, works great too.

5.) Music Choice

This is a bit of a personal one. You want music you relate to and that your think other people with enjoy and relate to as well. So many songs talk about overcoming obstacles, persevering, fighting for what’s right, etc that you can definitely find a song that relates to your journey. Give the artist credit in your video and YouTube description as well. YouTube has some controlled content. Just beware. Your first song choice might get flagged.

6.) Thumbnail

Now if you are looking to get some views to your YouTube P90X transformation video, you want a good thumbnail. A thumbnail is the small picture that comes up when someone searches for your video. These used to be seemingly random. You’d have to re-edit your video and try to place a still frame or section of video where your thought YouTube would pull your pic from. Now you can get your account ‘VERIFIED’ and make your own thumbnails. I know my account is verified so I can do this. You have to be in good standing with YT with a few of their guidelines. Please take the time and read YouTube’s FAQ on thumbnails and click the link to ‘verify’ your account.

Putting it all together for your YouTube P90X Transformation Video

I don’t think there is a set equation for making your YouTube P90X transformation video. Just tell your story. Thank those people that helped you along the way too. Many of us guys can give a lot of thanks to our wives for being supportive and helping us along the way (or at least dealing with our Fat Shredder diets LOL).

When your video is uploaded and ready to go, SHARE IT! Get it out there. Post it on Facebook. You have just done something pretty amazing and you should be proud. You may feel shy about sharing it at first (I know I did), but you’d be amazed at how inspired and encouraged people will become when they see your video and realize that you made it happen!

Also, be sure to send your video over to me too! I love to showcase transformations and I try to do that every Thursday.

So who’s going to be showing their transformation video next?
