Homemade Bread

*By Coach Anita (coachanita@teamripped.com)*

Many of you notice that part of Wayne’s daily diet is “homemade bread”.  We eat homemade bread nearly every day.  Our weekday breakfast is simple but complete.  For Wayne and I, it’s Shakeology and peanut butter toast (made with homemade bread and natural peanut butter).  And for the kids, it’s peanut butter toast plus something extra like turkey bacon, fruit smoothies, or sliced strawberries.

The peanut butter toast is a great way to get a filling, balanced start to the day.  We used to let the kids treat us like short order cooks, making eggo waffles, eggs and bacon, frozen sausage egg biscuits, cereal, etc.  We finally decided that all 5 of the kids need to eat the same thing, and that to simplify our morning routine it would be the same thing every day!  We decided peanut butter toast was it!  At first, they complained, but now they expect it, enjoy it, and eat it all up!  We let them liven it up with sliced bananas on top or some honey drizzled on it, but it’s basically the same thing every day.  That makes our morning routine so much more predictable, and its so healthy for our kids!

The foundation for our peanut butter toast breakfast is my homemade bread.  With 7 of us eating toast every morning, we go through the loaves pretty fast!  So I make homemade bread in bulk.  I know that Wayne has emailed the recipe to several of you over the last few months, so I decided to put it on the website for your reference.  My girls like to help me make it, so I got some pics of them in action!

The Wyatt’s Homemade Wheat Bread Recipe:

(This recipe makes 9 big loaves of bread)

Ingredients:

  • 8 cups warm water (about 120 to 125 degrees temperature)
  • 5 Tablespoons SAF yeast
  • 2 heaping Tablespoons Dough Enhancer
  • 1 cup oil
  • 1 cup honey
  • 2 Tablespoons salt
  • 24 cups of whole wheat flour
  1. Place all ingredients in your Mixer with only 10 cups of whole wheat flour.
  2. Turn Mixer on low speed.
  3. Slowly add the rest of the whole wheat flour till the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl…about 14 more cups of flour!
  4. Mix/Knead for 4 minutes.
  5. Form into 9 loaves and place in stainless Steel bread pans to rise once.
  6. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
  7. Enjoy!

The recipe I use is a slight modification from “Paula’s Bread” where I buy my wheat in bulk.  For more recipes (or for different quantities if you aren’t feeding an army like I am!!), check out her website:

Hi Breakpoint! I have added up the nutritional info in all the ingredients I use, then divide it out base on the # of loaves I make and the thickness I slice them (which is a little bit subjective, but I know how thick I like to slice it). It comes out to about 100 calories per slice of bread the way I slice it, with 3g protein, 20g carbs, and 1g fat.

    sweet! Thanks

Good Stuff Anita. Makes me think maybe we need a bread maker!

  7. Jonathan says:

Hey Coach, according to the pictures it looks like you are using 2 machines? One to ground the wheat and one to mix the ingredients correct?

If I don’t want to grind my own wheat, can I just buy wheat flour?

Thanks, can’t wait to try it.

  8. Coach Wayne says:

Jonathan, that is correct. If you don’t want to grind your own wheat, you won’t need the grinder. You can buy wheat flour. The nice thing about grinding your own is that the nutrients are much denser (because they leach out quickly after wheat is ground).

  9. Coreen says:

Thank you Mrs. Coach Wayne, i will try this at home :)

  10. Laura Fransen says:

Do you every try it in the bread machine? I like to make bread and buns by using the dough setting on my bread machine and then cooking it in the oven.

  11. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Laura, I’ll answer for Anita that we have used this same recipe ever since she got the wheat grinder and the mixer, but we don’t have one of those all-in-one bread mixing and cooking machines.

I never even thought about making my own bread, but this is sparking my interest. I might have to invest in the bread making tools for the new year. Project! Thanks. Peace. J.

    Hey Coach,

I’m a burger fanatic and still find ways to incorporate them into the P90X diet. I’ve found some whole wheat buns/wraps in stores, but have never been completely satisfied with their taste/texture. I really enjoy cooking and am just starting to get into bread-making. Do you or your wife have a recipe for a whole-wheat hamburger bun?

    Thanks,
    Robert

  15. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Robert, when I’ve done turkey burgers or lean beef burgers, I’ve used Natures Own sandwich rounds. They are a pretty good substitute for a bun. My wife has never tried to make her own buns.

  16. BJ says:

Coach, where do you get your Natures Own sandwich rounds? Would love to get my hands on them!

  17. Coach Wayne says:

Hey BJ, I get them at Walmart in the bread section.

  18. Ryan P. says:

Coach Wayne or Coach Anita. What type of mixer do you use? And where did you buy it?

  19. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Ryan, it’s a Bosch Universal Plus. Anita ordered it online.

  20. JoshKelly says:

Can’t wait to try this! :D

  21. Jason says:

What oil is it that you use in the bread ? Wish we had a Walmart over here, protein bars are like 45 dollars for 18 over here.

  22. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Jason, it’s extra virgin olive oil. Man that’s a lot of $$ for protein bars :-(. Sorry!!!

  23. christina says:

hey where do you get the dough enhancer?

  24. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Christina, my wife orders it from Paulasbread.com

    thanks! :)
