Gas station and convenience store snacks were my downfall before finding P90X! It was so easy to stop off on the way to work or when I would drive home and get a soda and some candy. This was always on top of the huge meals I was eating too! If you have had the same experience, you might need to just avoid going into a convenience store for a while as you build up good habits. BUT there are ok options at most convenience stores if you are on the go and need a snack.
Gas Station and Convenience Store Snacks
We don’t need to go over what to avoid do we LOL? But the pastries, candy, chips, hot dogs, soda, etc, etc, etc! You shouldn’t touch those :)
But what are some OK picks that will be healthy and help you hit your macros? Here are my TOP 5!
1.) WATER – Yes sir! Plain ol’ water. So many times you aren’t hungry, you are thirsty. Filling up with some water can help push back those hunger pangs and fill you up. No, it’s not magical but it can help strengthen your resolve to push back the temptation and stick to your plan.
***GET THIS THROUGH YOUR HEAD (if you are starting to whine…): You won’t die if you are hungry! I see a lot of people getting really worried that they may miss a meal… big deal! Stick to your plan. And if you can’t find something that fits your macros, just drink water. You’ll be fine. Trust me.***
2.) Beef Jerky – Probably not a surprise but it’s straight up protein! Watch out for varieties that have a lot of sugar. BBQ types can have some excess carbs. Go plain or peppered. Jack Links Original or Peppered is always a safe pick.
3.) Protein Bar – Most gas stations and stores have more of a variety of protein bars. READ THE LABELS! I have been able to find some Quest and Pure Protein Bars as of late. Those are normally your easiest on the macros.
4.) RTD Protein Shakes – Again, these seem to be popping up more and more. READ THE LABELS! But you can find that Muscle Milk RTD will work in a pinch. Better than going hungry and shouldn’t wreck your macros.
5.) Nuts – Careful here. Nuts are healthy, but they are basically solid fat. So make sure you have the macros and track the whole package if you eat the entire package. Companies are sneaky with their serving sizes to make them look low calorie. Be honest with how much you eat.
BEST OPTION FOR SNACKS ON THE GO!
Keep backup food packed in your car and bag/briefcase. If you have a cool place, you can easily store some extra Quest Bars and some whey for emergencies. Just don’t eat them all up on a regular basis. Really use them for those times you NEED them. That way you KNOW you will have an option that works well!
