Type 2 diabetes is a very real threat, and it has wreaked havoc on Americans the last 2 generations. Why? Because our diets have become absolutely horrible! We eat so much junk food, so much sugar, and so many refined carbs that our bodies have cried “UNCLE” and stopped trying to keep up the insulin levels to battle it. On top of that, we have become such lazy and sedentary people. We spend so much time on our butts in front of screens and so little time actually being active. It a horrible combo for health but a perfect storm for so many avoidable diseases.
Even sadder, our kids are slipping into the same habits they see us doing. Kids eat junk food, watch TV, play video games, and surf the internet and social media ALL DAY LONG! They never go outside and play like the “good old days”. No wonder childhood obesity and diabetes is spiking.
TIME FOR A CHANGE!!!!!!!
From MayoClinic.com on Type 2 Diabetes:
Type 2 diabetes, once known as adult-onset or noninsulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose), your body’s main source of fuel.
With type 2 diabetes, your body either resists the effects of insulin — a hormone that regulates the movement of sugar into your cells — or doesn’t produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level. Untreated, type 2 diabetes can be life-threatening.
Are you eating like a typical American? Then guess what? You will most likely become diabetic at some point in your life. Wow! That’s SCARY!
While there is a genetic component, lifestyle is a HUGE factor. Once you get it there is actually no “cure.” You can manage it through diet and exercise and may not need medication, but it is with you (and the damage that it has done). The severity of each persons Type II Diabetes plays a large role into what recovery and managing the disease will look like. This should scare the heck out of you! It scares me! Especially since I used to eat candy like every day was my last. If I hadn’t made a drastic change, I really believe that I would be headed for diabetes right now.
Praise the Lord that He gave me the opportunity to change, the strength to change, and a way to make the change.
I received the following email from one of our teamRIPPED members, telling me his story of being faced with diabetes at a very young age:
“Many of us know what diabetes is, but most of us assume it will never happen to me. At this very moment, you might be telling yourself the same thing. How do I know what you’re thinking? I know because it happened to me. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes two years ago. I was devastated when my doctor told me the news. I followed the same ideology that all of Americans did. I ate fast food numerous times a week. I knew I was eating unhealthy and I was gaining weight, but I always had an excuse why it would not happen to me. There was not a soul in my family who had ever had the disease, but as you can see that did not matter. Even after my diagnosis, I went to KFC and ate like a pig! I kept telling myself the test had to be a false positive. I was subsequently tested again a few days later and they were correct. My A1C was 7.8! That is really bad. After I left the doctors office, I cried like a little baby. What was I going to do?
Well after a serious bout with depression, I figured it out. I was watching a TV infomercial about P90X. Then I had an epiphany! Could this be my remedy? I ordered the program and gave it a shot. I won’t lie to you, I found it very difficult and I had to start over several times, because of injuries. This is really a world class workout. I have lost a total of 35 pounds since I started doing P90X. Tony would be disappointed in me because I still eat some junk food, but I am still bringing it 6 days a week. I can only imagine the results I could achieve if I was disciplined!
So in closing, it is time for all of you junk food junkies to put yourself in check. It may not happen to you tomorrow, but if you continue in the same path you will run into it head on!
–Todd”
After reading that, if you don’t have diabetes yet, be thankful! And do everything you can to go against the tide. Never let it happen to you or those you love! This isn’t just a personal battle. It affects our loved ones, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. If we care, we will HELP! Don’t let others become another statistic in the American obesity epidemic. Show them how to make the change, just like Todd!
