Hey teamRIPPED!!
Wow. I posted a rather benign article on PROTEIN yesterday, and who would have known that by the end of the day we’d have a comment thread of over 100 comments that reads like reality TV, complete with people pretending to be other people, accusing me of steroids, people unfriending me, leaving teamRIPPED cuz their feelings were hurt, arguments about haters, God, Jesus, the Bible, etc. It was quite the day LOL! If you want some hard core entertainment, go check out that comment thread. Good times ….
Anyways, the X2 Crew shirts are almost complete and will be shipping at the beginning of next week. So look for those! You’ll love them. And if you want to be sure whether or not I got your order, just check your paypal. If it shows a payment was sent to me, then your order was placed. I didn’t send out individual confirmations to all of you, but I double checked all paypal transactions so if you show a paypal transaction to me, you are good to go!
May is upon us in full force! It’s almost summer break for the kiddos. Yeah! I love summer. I can’t wait for a break from the homework, reading, prodding out the door every morning, etc. Even though I don’t get a break, it feels like one. And I have a very exciting summer ahead of me (I’ll dedicate an article to that in the coming days ….)
I hope everyone has enjoyed the X2 Crew results we’ve been highlighting. And if you didn’t see my video yet, be sure you check that out. I think it’s the best shape I’ve ever been in, and I thought I was already in great shape before X2. I’m getting ready to jump back in for round 2 of X2 as soon as I finish this fun Pump / Asylum hybrid month I’ve been doing for a change of pace.
I want to bring something to everyone’s attention — the controversy around DMAA (also known as 1,3-dimethylamylamine). This substance is found in many pre-workouts (or I should say it WAS in many PWO’s) and thermogenic fat burners. It has long been known that it could cause false positives on athletic drug tests, so athletes were warned not to use it just in case. But recently, the debate has become more intense regarding whether or not it could cause cardiac episodes (heart attacks), and the FDA has stepped in to regulate it’s use in supplements. So soon, this won’t be a controversy anymore, as you won’t be able to get it even if you want to LOL!
1MR already switched it’s formulation to remove it, but some other PWO’s like Jack3d still had it. There has been controversy about it’s risks for a while now, and those who follow the comments on this site know I’ve talked about it several times. But I want to bring it up again so that all of you can make informed decisions about what you put into your body.
There are those who say DMAA is harmful and untested and should not be consumed. There have been cases of heart attacks in users of DMAA containing supplements. These cases are rare, and it’s inconclusive as to whether it was the supplement that caused the heart attack or not. Others say that until there is research showing it’s danger, that it is safe to use in the quantities that are in current supplements. I clearly used DMAA in my PWO’s for a while when I was using Jack3d and 1MR, and so have millions and millions of others. However, I don’t use it anymore.
The FDA recently went after several supplement companies to have their products removed from shelves, including USP labs (the makers of Jack3d). I’ll let each of you do your own research and decide on what makes you feel most comfortable regarding this substance and whether or not you wish to use it in your supplements. Like I said, soon it won’t even be available if you wanted it. But if you already have some supplements containing it, I’ll let you do the research and decide if you want to toss it out or use what you have. I’m not here to tell you if it’s safe or not. I’m just here to give you the facts and let you decide.
And finally, in other news, the 8 finalists for the big $100,000 Beachbody Challenge prize have been named. Even though teamRIPPED rocked it and had 10 monthly winners over the last 10 months, we didn’t land a spot in the finals. But a friend of ours did — Jessica H. (who is coached by Sean Callahan of P90X2 fame). Get out the vote and throw our weight behind Jessica! It will help a great lady and a great coach (Sean) score some cash. He’s getting married soon and the prize money he would win for being her coach will come in handy. And read Jessica’s story. It’s an inspiration!
Vote for Jessica and read her story by CLICKING HERE.
And 2 favors that I ask:
1) If you like the hard work I put into writing my articles and videos, PLEASE help me out by sharing them. Click the share links below them and share them on FB, twitter, etc. It really helps me get more exposure and grow teamRIPPED!
2) Also, as always, remember that the way I benefit from being your coach is that I earn a commission from any Beachbody products that you purchase, as long as you buy them through my site, www.teamRIPPED.com, or by logging in to www.teambeachbody.com to do your shopping (If you buy from the plain beachbody site I get no credit). It helps with the amount of time I spend answering all your questions and helping you out. Thank you! I really appreciate it!
Keep bringing it and inspiring others to do the same gang!!
Hey coach... I was wondering when you think the next round of bowflex selectec discounts will be coming? Thanks
Not sure Travis. They are probably due to go on sale soon cuz it's been a while. "Like" their FB page and you'll get notified, or just stay plugged in here and I'll keep you updated.
hey coach.. I've been seeing the pictures of Body Beast on Beachbody.com and in some of the pictures they are using barbells and one guy in the back has the dumbbell alternative. I only have dumbbells(PowerBlocks) and I was wondering if they will be an equivalent alternative... or are barbells a must need?
Oh and btw I start what i'm calling summer90x (my p90x insanity hybrid). So you can't call me a hater anymore (especially after that protein powder forum this week; looks like you have some new critics)
LOL. Critics can talk all they want in anonymity. At least I put up my results for all the world to see and let you be the judge.
Yeah I know its not the same thing but its WAAAAAAY cheaper lol. Prob going to stick with the beachbody product but just wanted to see what you thought about this for when the wallet is thinner.
Yeah, it's cheaper but that's because it's not the same LOL. At half the price, it should at least have half the ingredients to be considered a decent value.
Hey coach I think I may have found a cheap alternative to Shakeology. Let me know what you think of this: http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=120776 And this one: http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4021740
Hey Al, those are definitely cheap alternatives to Shakeology. They can be added to the other cheap alternatives I've written about here = http://teamripped.com/shakeology/shakeology-alternative At least the greens product has some of the ingredients that Shakeology has (although not in original whole food form). But it's a start.
Well. I read ALL the comments, it took me quite a long time. I can now get a slight feel of what you go through everyday. Normally, people would only care about themselves, about their own results and about using their PRECIOUS time for their own benefits, but you sir have a cause that you are pursuing. To help people, and whoever says you are doing it for money or for "commission" is obviously blinded to the truth. Words are nothing, acts are everything, and since I came to this website, you have replied to EACH AND EVERY question I asked without delay (I got to say, even my best friend wouldn't answer so many questions) and you kept up with my whining and excuses. Like you said sir, this is your website and you are the coach, you are kind enough to admit and accept everyone into your team, and you take time to write articles which benefit us, not you. I used to practice kung fu, and I know that the coach, whether he is older or younger than you, must be given FULL respect. So NO sir, you were not out of line with Dustin, and definitely not with Jordan. In fact I find what they said inappropriate, whether they are kids or married adults with kids, the fact that they use this website means they recognize you as a coach, and the fact that they do means that they should show the respect earned with you being their coach. Your articles can be politely questioned, but you shouldn't let anyone reject what you said or talk in an unprofessional way. It is very enough that you reply to all of us, you can very easily not do it. What do you think sir ?
Thanks man! I appreciate the encouragement! Yeah, that was a lot of comments to read through, huh!!!
ok thx coach.. ive been doin 2100 fay shredder, n comin up short, so i prob just stay bout 1900/2k cals. need energy. dead late in day, lucky i wrkout early morn
Thanks coach, i have trouble with the bf%, when i measure it on my stomach i'm not sure what they mean by vertical pinch. One reading i take tells me its around 13mm but the other way tells me its 24mm which fluctuates from 7% -10% bf and that has not changed for at least 2 months now. So i always get confused when trying to use the skin-fold callipers. I had originally tried doing a round of p90x last year but gave up half way through due to personal problems that occurred and destroyed my diet and workouts, but at that time i had dropped my bf% to about 6% and weighed 175lbs in half the time. I consider this my first official round because i stuck with the diet for all 90 days with only about 1 cheat meal a month, if that. Thanks for the motivation coach, gonna try and keep my spirits up and bring it twice as hard this second round!
Watch some youtube videos on how to measure body fat with skin fold technique, and it should help make sense of it. Keep bringing it!!!!
hey coach, good news, as some of you know, im on the latest insanity commercial. funny stuff. all from my fist round about year ago. i just got invited to manahattan for interview and workout with sean t. more details to come. they asked me for current pic about week ago and called me yesterday, excited. so im going to stay doing sparta challenge, & im just going to add some insanity workouts on cardio days, thurs and saturdays and maybe even sub one in for plyo.... my question is i want to be the most shredded ever by june 10. for the next month what can give me the best quickest results. im at like 11% bf would love to get to single digits for workout with sean, and possibility of being in a live tv shoot or next insanity dvd.. i could not have done this without help of you and teamripped... any advice for 1 month shred.... ??? im at 188lbs and 6 1. and doing sparta challenge, thanks
Congrats again on the Insanity infomercial Mike! If you want to be as shredded as possible in 1 month, you know the answer is DIET! Fat shredder diet at a calorie deficit -- probably 1800 cals or so. And for workouts, Asylum would be the best. Otherwise an Insanity / P90X hybrid would also be great. Congrats and way to represent! Keep it up!!
hey coach i am having trouble with trying to lose the last five pounds i have and it's frustrating me, when i look in the mirror i see no changes and even last night i weighed myself and i was 187 pounds but that morning i was 182.5 and i ate 2300 cals that day, my mantiance level is close to 2850 so i have no clue whats going on. This lack of progress is really affecting my motivation and my ability to perform these workouts, i just finished my 90 days today so im going to do a second round and swtch the cardio workouts with insanity circuits. However, i have been watching my calories, eating healthy so i dont know whats wrong with my approach. Could it be that I havent been drinking very much water or that im consuming to many sugars (from natural fruit not refined sweets or other junk) and i havent had a cheat meal in three weeks. Any advice coach?
Hey Garrett, don't get frustrated. You are 3 months into a total lifestyle change, so you can't expect to be totally at your ultimate goals already. I wasn't either at day 90. I was still 8% body fat, and still had some lower belly fat. But I sure wasn't frustrated. I knew I just wasn't to my goal yet. As for your daily fluctuation, that's totally normal. I weigh about 6 lbs more at night than I do in the morning, due to food, water, etc. You may be overanalyzing things (the reason I say this is because you should be weighing yourself and taking body fat measurements once a week, at the same time of day on the same day of the week, and you are analyzing changes within the same day). Plus, you haven't said anything about your body fat %. Where is it now, and has that changed lately? That's a whole lot more important than weight. Also, it's good that you haven't had a cheat meal in 3 weeks. I didn't have one for 6 months while I was focused on reaching my goals. Keep that up!!!
diet all good coach 100% on the money there, hydration is probably the problem, thinking about it i haven't drank alot lately except during workouts, at 7.5%BF do you think i should be thinking of changing the diet to 40/40/20 but still run at 1700 calories, thanks for the quick responce as always
Yeah Ian, drink that water, and also it is probably time to shift to a balanced 40/40/20. You might also want to slowly increase cals for some muscle and strength building, but monitor body fat as you do because you don't want to go too high and add body fat at this point.
Great read coach, Question- i have been monitoring my body fat the way you said with the 3 site j&p and it reads 7.5% BF but i have noticed over the last week or two as i been dropping a little more BF my abs is starting to feel more flat(disappearing) is this normal or a sign to start taking in more carbs and maybe calories, im currently taking in 16-1700 on the fat shredder. hope this makes sense ian
Hey Ian. I'm really not sure why your abs would seem to be disappearing if your body fat is dropping. It should be the other way around. If your body fat is dropping, other causes of the sensation that your abs are disappearing have to do with hydration levels and sodium intake. Have you changed up your diet?
Hey Jesse, I'm not sure what you mean by plank pullups? Do you mean levers? If so, then yes, they actually show it with a chin up max in the X2 videos.
Hey coach Wayne! Im am so grateful for all the information you have provided every single one of us whether its nutrition advice, p90x equipment, or even different workout program recommendations...I also wanted to let you know that I will be starting my first round of p90x on Monday, Therefore I was wondering if you had any last minute tips/advice or even words of encouragement for me before I begin my journey? Thanks again for everything!
Hey Jean, you sound prepared. Just be ready to bring it, never quit, stay committed, and stay accountable. Looking forward to your progress!
Hey Gurjeet, it's obviously not as ideal or healthy as water, but it's good as a way to transition yourself from pop and such to water over time.
Coach: Thanks for the updated information on DMAA. I sporadically used 1MR for a while, but it gave me a "buzzed" feeling that I didn't like and haven't used it in months. With the new risks you mentioned, I feel comfortable throwing the rest in the trash.
Hey doc, Sometimes I find myself not always hitting my macros on point. I'll either go over or under. Like today, I went over my fats by 10 grams, my carbs were under by 33 grams and protein went under by 26. I know it may not always be perfect, but I was wondering. What percentage would you think is safe to deviate? 2%, 3%...no more than 5 on either macro?
It's best to aim for the following if you are going to err -- Over on protein. Under on fat. Carbs make up the difference. So the way you missed your targets is exactly backwards lol. Plan ahead!
@ matt, thanks, i have meeting with my superint. let u know how it goes. coach w, do have an email of someone of importance i can email and get some feedback. i have emailed just customer service reps. who are useless in this matter. maybe i can email carl d, what is his email, are u allowed to give it to me. or i can email you and you forward it.. im not looking for any money or anything. just maybe get a program started, even pilot one... it can take off. schools want to go fitness based and get away from traditional gym.. they want to fight obesity,,, thanks
Hey Mike, there is a chain of command on these issues, and I can guarantee you that the leadership has been approached about this exact idea (school health / fitness programs) many many times. The question isn't whether or not they've thought about it. The question is, what are the circumstances, regulations, rules, and processes that have to happen before it can become a reality. The next time I'm visiting with them I will ask, because I know they have looked into it before and it's a lot more complicated than saying, yeah it's a great idea.
Hey coach! I was wondering which pull up bar you have from Rogue. I didn't see a wall mount one. I want to get a good sturdy one. I'm also 6' 4" and a big guy. Thank you sir!
Greeting from Scotland Wayne! I've been following your great website for months now and it has been a great motivating factor in turning my life around. I'm 32 years old and 5ft 10" (177cm) tall and in January this year I weighed 192 lbs I felt terrible and was at a low ebb. After 90 days of p90x and currently In my 6th week of insanity I now weigh 161 lbs and have never felt better. These programmes have transformed my life. However now I have burned off my body fat I am chronically aware how skinny I am and how little muscle I have. So much so my wife has trid to encourage me to not complete insanity!!! I feel great but my next step is to go all out in bulking up. I had thought about doing just the 3 resistance workouts from p90x twice a week and upping my diet. I had planned to leave out the back portion of the legs and bak workout so as not to overdo the back muscles. This way their should be 72 hours between working out each muscle group. Do you think this will work or is it too much? If so how long should I do it for? I'm all for the balanced exercise program that P90x offers but right now I just want to bulk up fast as possible. Keep up your great work Wayne, Cheers, Ian
Hey Ian! Way to go man! You have made some huge progress! If you are ready to start bulking up, then doing less cardio makes sense. However, your muscles grow during the rest (not the workout) so doing a lot more lifting (6 days per week) won't get you faster results. It will slow you down, because you will be working the same muscle groups on consecutive days. Read my article "overtraining" for details on how that is = http://teamripped.com/overtraining
cool... ive been wanting a set but i definitely would like to buy them at a discount... ill just stay plugged in here thanks
