ChaLEAN Extreme … it’s not a brand new workout program, so it isn’t as hyped or popular as Turbo Fire, or of course the big dogs P90X and Insanity. But it was on sale this month ($30 off through the end of January), so I bought it for my wife, Anita.
She has done P90X and Insanity with me, and she can hang! But honestly she just doesn’t have a life-long desire to keep pushing herself that hard. And that’s okay. I don’t fault her for that at all. I on the other hand can’t get enough of the intensity!
But I knew a few things about ChaLEAN Extreme that I thought might appeal to her. First, the workouts are shorter (in the half hour range vs. the full hour of P90X). Next, it has both resistance and cardio, like P90X, which I feel make a great long-term fitness option. So I figured I’d get it for her and see how she liked it.
I have to say I am very impressed with the program. From the moment I opened the box I was pleasantly surprised. The packaging shows how much went into developing this workout program. It’s not just some DVD’s in a sleeve. It’s a complete, well engineered holder for the DVD’s, a complete nutrition guide, and a workout guide that not only has the blanks for filling out reps/weight, but actually has pictures of each exercise showing the correct form to use. And it has a workout calendar, body fat calipers, and a resistance band. Again, it’s got it all and it’s very well put together. What’s more, on the intro DVD Chalene actually takes you through her kitchen showing you food prep, and she has her husband demo all kinds of the exercises with correct form and discusses the most common mistakes in form. Very educational.
Anita loves it. It’s like an easier, less intense version of P90X. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still pretty intense. Anita was sweating and breathing hard, and she’s a seasoned P90X and Insanity girl! It’s just a little less intense, and shorter.
It uses weights 3 days per week like P90X, but the moves are more compound, with lighter weights (usually 5′s, 10′s, and 15′s). There are no pullups (praise the LORD according to Anita LOL!). And there are also 2 cardio days and 2 ab routines that you rotate. So in all you are working out 5 times per week (3 lift days, 2 cardio days with abs afterward, 2 rest days), for about 30-40 minutes each time. This is right up Anita’s alley. She could see herself doing a program like this long term.
I’m going to keep pushing myself with P90X and Insanity … and Asylum … and MC2 … or whatever they throw at me! But some people may prefer something less intense or less intimidating. This might be what they are looking for. Or maybe you are a guy who is loving your P90X and wanting to get your wife going with a workout too, and she won’t jump into P90X for fear that it’s more than she can handle.
What Turbo Fire is to Insanity, ChaLEAN extreme is to P90X. And it’s really nice! I just want to be sure I get this review to you while it’s still $30 off, because you are getting a lot of value for your money with ChaLEAN Extreme! And it’s only $30 off until the end of January (3 more days) so hopefully you are checking this blog often! :-)

My wife has a old knee issue from playing sports . Are there a lot of squat type execrises in this routine?
Hey Brandon. Yes, there are some. They aren't as high impact as P90X type moves, but there are definitely squats and lunges.
So glad you posted this one Coach. WIfe's been looking for something new and wanting to get back into the swing of things but neither P90X nor Insanity Workout is really her cup of tea (to her credit she did try both). I just picked it up for her...the extra $30 kind of made it hard to say no. Plus with TBB's money back guarantees you do get 30 days to evaluate the program. (If she doesnt like it I"m gifting it to my little sister, her fifth child is due 2/14).
I am switching from P90X to Chalean Extreme. Do you recommend continuing to use the P90X Results & Recovery Drink on weight days? It looks like the workouts are not as intense, but would muscle development still benefit from the drink, assuming I allow for the calories in my daily intake?
