P90X Reviews

Everyone’s looking for a good P90X review from someone who’s used it for a while.  With over a year of experience using P90X, and results that speak for themselves, I want to give a full review about the program for all of you who may be considering it.

I reviewed P90X several months ago, after finishing my first round of P90X.  Now, I have 12 months of non-stop experience with the X and have become much more familiar with what P90X will do and how it can be used to accomplish multiple goals.  So I decided to write an UPDATED review of my favorite program, P90X.  This is an ideal time also, as many folks are just now looking into this awesome program and may be looking for information on how to jumpstart a New Year’s Resolution to get in shape!

What is P90x? In my opinion, it is the BEST overall home fitness program ever developed.  Why?  Because it works!  Period!  (*Disclaimer — it works if you DO IT!!)  This program is so good that even when I travel to a hotel and have the option of using a weight room, I go to the effort of bringing my stuff to do P90X, rather than use the weight and cardio machines.  It’s really that good!  And with 10 months under my belt, you can see from my transformation pics that a gym simply isn’t necessary to get ripped and muscular.  Everything you see in my results was accomplished in my living room!  Not once have I worked out in a gym!  You’ll hear people say you need a gym to build muscle.  That’s simply not true.  See my tips on Building Mass with P90X for more (in the “my tips” tab at the top of the screen).  And clearly, with the total package of nutrition, supplements, and the variety of workouts, P90X will help you burn tons of calories, get fit and healthy, tone the muscles, and make you more athletic.

I am a former college football player, so I’ve been through alot of lifting and conditioning over the years, and I’ve done the gym membership thing.  The problem with the gym membership “thing” is that there is no real direction.  You are left to pick and choose your own routine, which usually doesn’t lead to the type of body transformation you were hoping for, and leads to plateaus and burnout.  Then that gym membership card starts collecting dust.  At least that was my experience!

With P90X, you get everything you need to transform your body.  You get first-class lifting workouts, which build every muscle group you can imagine (and some you didn’t even imagine!).  Since the lift routines are circuit style (minimal rest between excercises), you get a huge calorie burn as well (I burn appx. 900 calories per lifting workout, with my HR going over 170 several times.  That’s intense for a lifting workout!)  You also get good cardio routines to burn additional fat and tone your body (I burn over 1,000 calories on PlyoX).  It’s all put together for you into a routine that is constantly changing things up to keep you stimulated, both physically and mentally.  It never gets “boring”!

Most importantly, included with the program you get a first-class nutrition guide to make sure you are fueling your body for success with the program.  It can be catered to meet your particular needs, whether it be losing body fat, building muscle mass, or both.  Beachbody also provides an extensive line of supplements to fit your particular needs and goals as you go through P90X.

When you receive P90X, you will receive 12 DVD’s, along with a Fitness Guide and Nutrition Guide. The Fitness Guide has about 100 pages that go into great detail about each of the workouts and how to do the exercises. The Nutrition Guide is a comprehensive 3 phase guide that explains how, what, and when to eat.

Once you begin the program, you’re quickly going to realize why the program is so effective! For one thing, you are going to be extremely sore during the first few weeks! I know I was! When Beachbody talks about muscle confusion, they aren’t kidding!

I started the program at 255 lbs and 23% body fat.  After the first month, I had lost 20 lbs and about 9% body fat, and was already in the best shape of my life, and knew that it was only going to get better. When day 90 rolled around, I had lost a total of 43 lbs and 15% body fat, and was absolutely ripped! I finished with just 8% body fat! That’s CRAZY!!  I still can’t believe how amazing the results are with P90X!

People literally could not believe my transformation, and immediately wanted to know what I did. I told them that “if you are able to commit yourself to this program that you too could get into the best shape of your life!” If you’re one of those people who are tired of being out of shape and ready for a change, click below to try P90X today! It worked for me and it can for you too!

Hey Coach Wayne! Let me ask ya..What do you use when u travel to workout? You bring the DVD’s? What if no DVD player, just by memory? Do u use bands, if so what bands?

  2. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Kirk, I don’t ever travel for long enough to need to do the lift days on the road. It’s only a weekend here or there. And that’s easy to re-arrange the rest days and the cardio days so that all I need is a portable DVD player and the Plyo DVD/Interval DVD (or whatever the case may be). If I were typically on the road for a week at a time, I’d get the set of bands and take those with me so that I didn’t miss the resistance days. And I’d still bring the portable DVD player. Funny thing is, the hardest part about traveling for me is that I refuse to skip a day with my Shakeology so I actually pack a blender in my suitcase, which takes up nearly 1/3 of the space LOL!

    Kirk –

Most hotels have gyms now so you can modify your workouts to address the specific body part you are working. I went camping for a week during my first round of P90X. I had to really modify because I had no gym to go to.

If there is one thing that I would stress is that you MUST maintain your eating habits. Just because your on vacation or traveling, you can’t cheat. I made sure I maintained my eating habits. As they say its 80% nutrition 20% working out.

I used Livestrong.com’s phone app for Blackberry to keep track of what I ate and used that a a guide to plan out my meals for the week. I didn’t cheat and boy it was tough. It’s tough watching your family eat smores over the fire and you are stuck eating a chalking tasting protein bar! LOL

Prior to leaving I scanned the pages of the P90X workout guide and printed out the workouts and brought those with me. I attempted to do those workouts as best I could.

On the days that required weights for specific excersise I just modified my workout the best I could. I did a lot of pushups and pullups ( trees branches work great as pull up bars ) to failure to make sure that I got the burn. I also ran to keep up the cardio portion of P90X.

I will be honest, I was concerned about missing a week of P90X because I was totally dedicated to the program.

However at the end of Round 1, I can say that I reached my goals, even with a week of complete modification from the program due to vacation.

I started out at 192, ended at 168. Body fat when from 25% to 12%.

    Hope this helps.

A blender in the suitcase?!!! LOL!! Can’t you just use a shaker bottle with Shakeology (minus the PB, ice and other stuff you mix in yours)?

Speaking of Shaekeology, I am still waiting on my 14 December order of Shakeology. Beachbody doesn’t seem to work well with shipping to APO’s.

  7. Coach Wayne says:

Wow Nathan, that is a LONG time!! Good grief! Hopefully you’ll get it soon! And yes, I gotta have that smooth shake with the crushed up ice LOL!

  8. John Barlow says:

    coach,
I’m trying to lose a lot of fat this round, and i was wondering if it would be a good idea to sub Cardio X for Yoga, or should i just stick with the plan, i saw where u ended up subbing an Insanity Workout workout in the later phases but i don’t have it yet. Any help would be great! Thanks!

  9. Coach Wayne says:

Hey John, anything that burns more calories (like cardio x in place of yoga) will help you lose weight faster. So go for it! Or, if you have time in your day, you can do “Doubles” which involves doing the P90X Classic routine PLUS doing Cardio X 3x per week (or at least it’s something similar to that. I don’t have my workout guide with me here at work and I didn’t do doubles myself).

  10. John Barlow says:

Ok cool! i play basketball in a league a couple times a week and football on Saturdays too so i’m hoping that’ll get my heart rate up too, so i might sub Cardio X for it and see how that works, Thanks Coach!!

  11. Khafre Deans says:

Hey Coach today was an intresting day…I was doing my shoulders and arms today and the previous night it snowed 12-15″ of snow…so instead of doing the bonus round i was outside shoveling mine and my neighbor’s drive way…In honest opinion do you think this will help?….oh and I did BRING IT!! to that driveway LOL
    “K”

  12. Coach Wayne says:

Hey man, I’m sure all that shovelling was a lot more than just the bonus round, so I’m sure you are good to go!

  13. CoachDoubleL says:

    Hey Coach,
Do you think the recovery weeks are necessary for Round 2 of P90X. In round 1 my body definitely needed it but I don’t feel like I do now. What are your thoughts?

  14. CoachDoubleL says:

One last question coach…I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m looking for harder cardio workouts and another day to work my arms and chest for Round 2. Would you suggest mixing in P90X plus or Insanity Workout for someone like me who has made great strides but still has a long way to go.

  15. Coach Wayne says:

LL, I still do them and I feel like for the purposes of doing a workout program long term, like round after round, the recovery weeks are very important to keep in, even if you feel like pushing on.

  16. Coach Wayne says:

I definitely recommend both Insanity Workout for cardio intensity and P90X Plus for variety on lifting days. If you have to choose just one, start by adding Insanity Workout. You’ll get more out of that with your P90X that you currently have.

I was wondering if anyone has had trouble with their wrists hurting while doing Yoga? Is there something to help the wrists or a good substitute for yoga?
