P90X Plus

Most of you already know a lot about P90X — most of you are doing it!  And there is so much buzz right now about The Next P90X (rightfully so — it will be the MOTHER of all workouts!!).

But since The Next P90X won’t come out until late 2011, what are some choices for folks who will graduate from P90X before then?  Well, of course you can do another round of the X.  Or you can try Insanity.  Or you can do a hybrid.

But another choice is P90X Plus, which was designed for P90X Grads.  So let me give you some tips about P90X Plus so you can decide if it’s something you want to do, either as a stand-alone program or as a way to supplement and add variety to a future round of the X.

First, I must say that  P90X is by far my favorite stand-alone program.  If you are going to do 1 and just 1 program, I think it MUST be P90X.  That has it all (lifting, cardio, nutrition, and is repeatable indefinitely).  However, that doesn’t mean I don’t like these other programs.  I just don’t feel that they are the whole package that P90X is.

Compared to P90X, P90X Plus workouts are shorter (45 minutes or so), and the exercises are more synergistic (meaning they involve mutiple muscle groups).  The lifts are all for time rather than reps, so it’s not as good for bulk muscle building as the classic P90X.  With P90X Plus, my heart rate gets real high and I get a big calorie burn while still pushing the muscles with the lifts.  It’s a great change-up to the classic P90X style.

There are 5 workouts.  Upper Body Plus and Total Body Plus are the lift workouts.  I like both of these very much and use them regularly in my Hybrid Workouts.  I use the Upper Body Plus as one of my 3 lift days, and I use Total Body Plus as a recovery week workout (it’s like an advanced version of Core Synergistics).

The Abs / Core Plus is a great Ab workout, but is much more technically difficult than Ab Ripper X.  All exercises target the abs, but you rotate between hanging (using the pullup bar), standing, plank, and on the ground.  They really burn the core and abs!  I use this workout regularly as well.

The Interval X is a really fun HIIT workout, in which you go through a series of 1 minute excercises at 3 different speeds (slow, medium, fast).  It’s a great, Insanity-type, cardio workout. Again, this workout is one that I do on a regular basis.

The only workout I don’t care for is Kenpo Cardio Plus.  I’m not a big fan of the original P90X Kenpo either.  I just don’t feel like punching and kicking the air gives me as good of a workout as the interval training of Interval X or the Insanity workouts.  However, if you are a fan of the P90X Kenpo, you’ll really like the Kenpo Cardio Plus.

In conclusion, I use all of the P90X Plus workouts (except Kenpo) in my Hybrid workouts, but I don’t do a stand-alone P90X Plus routine.  They are a great way to supplement and customize your P90X routine.  There is no nutrition guide.   It’s assumed that users of this program are already very familiar with the P90X nutrition guide.  The workouts are GREAT though, and very different from the classic P90X.

Will there be a kenpo workout in The Next P90X?

  2. CoachAnt says:

Thanks Coach just finishing up my recovery week for 180 days round 2 and will be putting together something special for 3rd round.

  3. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Super Mario, NO, there won’t be Kenpo.

  4. Coach Bruce says:

Welcome back Coach Wayne. Sounds like you had a blast! On my last week of your Perfect Storm Hybrid then I have the recovery week then on to another Hybrid (with some “special workouts”) waiting on Asylum to hit the market! Keep BRINGING IT teamRIPPED!

Hey coach, agree with you on the kenpo! my next round im mixing x and Insanity Workout , but was gonna add more for lifts since i’ll remove legs and back cause of Insanity Workout . Do you think this is worth getting this round or just a few 1 on 1′s like v-sculpt and just arms. Also is this ab routine better then the 1 on 1 one? Thanks!

  6. Coach Wayne says:

You can do either, but this is a better value if you plan on using 4 of the 5 DVD’s on a regular basis (assuming you don’t use the kenpo). I like this ab routine because it’s hard and works the core a lot. It’s got ab work in multiple positions, including hanging from the pullup bar. It will work your core!

  7. Jason says:

If you were to incorporate the Plus videos in your classic P90X routine, would you do the Plus Ab routine after a lifting video from the classic P90X?

  8. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Jason, the P90X Plus Abs/ Core Plus takes longer (about 25 minutes), so I don’t like doing it after a lift workout. That makes the workout too long. I like it as a stand-alone on an ab-only day, or as a supplement on a shorter lift or cardio day. But that’s just my preference.

  9. Jason says:

Oh okay. So how many times would you do it or incorporate it in the program per week?

  10. Coach Wayne says:

Depends! You can do it for every ab day (2-3), or you can rotate it with ARX and do it just once per week with ARX the other 1-2 times. It’s whatever you want!

  11. Jason says:

Ohhh I seee. Thanks for the tip coach!

  12. Coach Josh says:

I just finished up P90X+, and I really liked the change up. I agree that Kempo is not as intense as some of the other cardio, but I still like it. However, I’m into week 2 of Insanity Workout, and it is named appropriately. I’m going to be in very good cardio shape for baseball in a couple months after this 60 days. I definitely see why you would hybrid with Insanity Workout for cardio, because there is nothing in P90X that touches the intensity in that area.

  13. John says:

    Hey Coach,

I am just about done with my first round of P90X (today is my last day). I’m treating myself to a day off tomorrow and will start round 2 on Monday. I plan on sticking with the recommended workout, but don’t want to do the Yoga. I don’t want to spend any more money on programs, so I’d like to stick to something I already own. I lost all the weight I needed to (down from 240 to 170), so I don’t think I want to add in any more cardio. Any suggestions on which P90 workout I should substitute?

  14. Coach Wayne says:

Hey John, Core Synergistics is a good substitution for Yoga out of the P90X lineup. Try that.

  15. John says:

Hey Coacy – I’m with you on the P90X+ Kempo…really don’t like it much. I really like the Kempo X though and am thinking of substituting it for the Kempo/Core. I track calorie burn and found that I can burn over 600 doing Kempo X, but only 350 doing Kempo/Core. Do you think it would be a good idea to drop this?

  16. Coach W says:

    Hey John,
If you like the KenpoX better then Kenpo/Core then by all means switch it out, plus if your getting a higher energy output from it then thats a bigger bonus as well. Do with whats best for you and Im seeing 2 positives already.

  17. Dustin says:

Coach I was just curious, what did you sub in for Kenpo X if you weren’t a fan of it?

  18. Coach Wayne says:

Sometimes CardioX, sometimes PlyoX (for a second time in a week).

  19. Nick says:

Hey Coach, what do you think about supplementing the Upper Body + for Legs and Back in a training block that has Back and Biceps and Chest, Shoulders, Tris for lift days, and Asylum for cardio days? I feel like my legs get a pretty good workout on the Asylum days and the Legs and Back dvd has gotten stale!

  20. Coach Wayne says:

Sure Nick, that would be a great substitution. I have often done the same thing (see my hybrids in the “workout zone”).
