**UPDATE = As of 6/6/2011, the NEW design of the PowerStands is the only option. BB no longer sells the original metal ones. I want everyone to be aware of that as they order — they will get the new redesigned PowerStands (see details below).
I bought PowerStands near the end of my Round 1 of P90X, and I totally fell in love with them. They are solid steel, very stable, and the handle is ideally angled to keep your wrists in the most comfortable and stable position. Plus, the extra range of motion that the PowerStands provide are great for adding strength and muscle. Your chest/pecs will definitely feel the difference from the extra depth you get on the pushups!
As part of my behind-the-scenes access with The Next P90X, I’ve seen up close and personal the NEW PowerStands. They are different than the originals! Here’s how:
1) The new PowerStands are shorter than the originals. This is because they were finding that people were injuring themselves with the extra range of motion of the original PowerStands. In other words, the new ones do NOT allow as much range of motion because they are shorter (the handle is closer to the ground). This is a liability issue for BB, but I prefer the greater ROM of the originals — and NO, I’ve never injured myself with the extra ROM and I use them daily.
2) The new PowerStands are PLASTIC, not steel. They are sturdy, but they are not dynamite-proof like the originals. It’s good plastic, but it’s still plastic. This is probably to save on weight since the originals are like lugging cast iron skillets around, but again I prefer the extra weight and strength of the originals.
Other than that, they are basically the same. They both have a huge circular base that makes them very stable. They both have a great ergonomic angle of the handle and great padding on the handle that puts your wrists and hands in the right, comfortable position during a variety of pushup exercises.
Okay, so can you tell that I like the original PowerStands better? I do! I’m glad I got mine, and I like the extra range of motion. And I definitely like the steel base and indestructible frame.
As of right now, if you order the PowerStands, they will still be the original ones (like mine). At some point, and I don’t know when, the new ones will replace them. I ordered another pair of the originals while I can still get them (for when I work out with my wife or brother)!
I just want to give everyone a heads up now while you still have the option of getting the originals.
