Everybody loves supplements :-) I haven’t really run a supplement overview in a while! So I thought I would share with you what I am currently doing for supplements and some of my experiences and thought behind my choices.
My Current Supplement Stack
I hit on this a little with my Beast Diet Plan. Supplements are definitely part of your diet. They can’t be the most important part, but they do help build up weak areas of your nutrition and there are quite a few really proven supplements out there. Just like you, I want to spend my money wisely and make sure I am getting the most out of my supplement budget. These are in no particular order, outside of #1.
#1 Shakeology
This should come as no surprise, but this is hands down my most important supplement. I haven’t gone a day without it and won’t. It’s really amazing to see what you get in a serving of Shakeology. #2 E&E
I have used a lot of pre-workouts over the years. There are stronger PWOs than E&E but I really appreciate that I know I am getting a natural and safe supplement with E&E. It’s just enough of a boost to get me going and then once I’m warm, IT’S ON! ***This is backed up by a 30 day guarantee too… BB doesn’t mess around.
If you are looking for an even more all-inclusive PWO, I would suggest trying Pre JYM. It combines proven supplements in a real, research backed dose. All your BCAAs, creatine, beta alanine, and more in one supp. That is why it is a little pricer. It’s like what most people use 2-3 different supps to make. It also has a larger dose of caffeine, so be aware if you are at all sensitive to stimulants. What I appreciate about Pre JYM is that there are no proprietary blends. You know exactly what you are getting. I would love if E&E did that too, but I understand companies wanting to protect their work. I can really see both sides, but I like knowing exactly how much of each ingredient I am taking.
#3 Results and Recovery
I’m using this a little differently than I have in the past. I am using this pre workout and into my workout. I have always worked out on an empty stomach, but with the Year of the Beast, I know I need more fuel to get the most our of my bulk/building stage. That is where R&R comes in perfectly. R&R is simple carbs and your body can get energy form them almost right away. I take my R&R about 30 minutes before I workout. I have noticed a great increase in energy to really push hard during my Beast workouts.A lot of people rely on caffeine and other stimulants to keep them going on an empty stomach, I did even. But I have noticed with real fuel, I get more out of my workouts and I don’t feel like I need a lot of stimulants (E&E has been just right). I know that cutting back on my caffeine intake is good for me too. It’s a win-win.
#4 BCAAs
With working out in the early morning, before a real meal, I want some protein to fuel my muscles! BCAAs, branched chain amino acids, are essentially pre-digested protein. They don’t need to be digested and enter right into your bloodstream giving your muscle fuels to work and build! This combined with my R&R gives me a really complete pre-workout meal without the weight of a real meal, or needed to wait for it to digest. I can get right to work!
I like SciVation’s Xtend for my BCAAs. Xtend also has a great amount of BCAAs and a good profile of electrolytes to aid in my workouts too. Finally I get the added bonus of some glutamine. All in all, Xtend is a really well rounded BCAA supp and you get a lot of bang for your buck. It also tastes great!
#5 Creatine
Plain ol’ creatine monohydrate. Why is there so much buzz with creatine? Cuz it works!!! You don’t need some fancy creatine blend either. Use what is proven and get plain creatine monohydrate. Supplement with 5g a day and let your muscles get saturated. You don’t need to cycle it either. It is the safest and most effective supplement out there. It increases power and will make you fuller by drawing more fluid to your muscles. It’s so cheap too! If you want TONS of info on creatine, see The Scoop on Creatine.
#6 Whey
Last but certainly not least, the all mighty WHEY protein! Whey is such an easy way to get muscle building protein in at convenient times and without much work. It is also digested faster than whole foods which makes it great pre or post workout. I am using less than I have in the past with only 1 scoop a day in my morning Shakeology.I still love ISO 100. I think it has one of the BEST profiles and tastes pretty good. I love how lean it is and that I am only getting basically pure, fast digesting protein. If you are on a tighter budget, I would suggest checking out Six Star Isolate from Walmart. It is a great budget friendly option for a whey isolate. Those are my Supplements!
See my plan is pretty straight forward and I am getting a lot out of my supplements. I take them all in the morning, just pre and post workout. After that, I am done with supplements for the day.
I’ve said this before, but I know I need to again, cuz people will ask do you NEED any supplements? No, you can have a great transformation without them.
Do supplements really work? Yes. I know the work I am putting in and I want to get that final edge and advantage to all my hard work. That is why I use supplements. Find what fits in your budget and goals, and GO FOR IT!
Never hesitate to get my opinion too. I have used a lot more supps in the past LOL and have a lot of knowledge and experience.
