Les Mills COMBAT Review

We all have different preferences when it comes to workouts.  I’ll be the first to admit that I like lifting workouts best.  I do cardio because I know I need it, but I don’t enjoy cardio as much.  Body Beast was the ultimate program for a guy like me who likes to lift and lift hard.

I’ll freely admit that Kenpo X was my LEAST favorite workout from P90X.  I’m not a fan of punching and kicking the air (I know that’s an over-simplification).  So as I set out to sample the full COMBAT lineup, I didn’t anticipate that I’d fall in love with it.

And I didn’t!  LOL.

……….. However, it was MUCH better than I would have imagined

It’s not all kicking and punching the air.  This MMA style workout really pushes you in a lot of areas — cardio, power, explosiveness, core, coordination, and strength.

Sure, there are some workouts that do a lot of strikes, like Combat Kickstart, Power Kata, Ultimate Warrior’s Workout, and Extreme Cardio Fighter.  However, even those workouts aren’t anything like Kenpo from P90X.  They are a great blend of MMA and full body movements that really burn some cals, crush your core, and get the heart rate sky high.

Plus, what really impressed me was the workouts that have no kicking or punching at all.  The Power HIIT and Shock Plyo HIIT are brutal full body workouts that don’t have a single punch or kick.  I wore a HRM during both of those workouts, and I burned nearly 600 cals in each (and they are only 30 minutes long, so they are action packed to say the least!).

And then there are the advanced workouts Upper Body Blow Out, Lower Body Lean Out, and Core Attack (available in the Ultimate Warrior set) that give you a really diverse set of workouts that work your body from every angle.

With COMBAT, you don’t have to worry about getting bored with doing a very similar workout every day.  Some days you’ll do a lot of strikes.  Other days you’ll focus on building a strong core and ground game.  And other days you’ll work on power and strength with weights.

Overall, I’d say that if you are looking for an MMA style workout, COMBAT is the best on the market.

For those wanting pure cardio, Insanity can’t be beat.

For those wanting pure lifting / bodybuilding, Body Beast can’t be beat.

For those wanting total body strength and fitness, P90X and X2 can’t be beat.

For those wanting pure athletic speed and agility, Asylum and Asylum 2 can’t be beat.

The Les Mills workout programs (both COMBAT and PUMP) offer a very good hybrid workout that gives you some of everything, but not too much of any one thing.  I enjoyed doing Pump with my wife, who really loved it.  And I’ll enjoy doing Combat with her as well.  Then it’ll be back to my heavy lifting Beast and P90X workouts for the new year! :-)

Keep bringing it!
