Pierre’s Story =
I had always been active throughout my life. Involved in all kinds of different sports as a child, mainly baseball and gymnastics, and I would spend literally hours a day on my mountain bike riding all over town and through whatever woods I could find. In my teen years, school sports took over and I played on a lot of team sports, namely handball, volleyball, and basketball. I also discovered a love for competitive orienteering, which is basically cross country running with a map and compass, cross country skiing and winter biathlon. All these activities kept me active, motivated and in shape. However, muscle mass was never a goal with these, as they are all mainly cardio endurence and athletic type activities.
My college years, all 8 of them through medicsl school, involved as many team sports as possible in the time I had, but that time gradually diminished over the years.
Then the typical thing happened. Life. No more team sports to play, no more time made or taken for fitness. Found my awesome life partner and had three amazing children. Career as an emergency physician took off. All was well…
But I felt sluggish. Slowly but surely over time, bought bigger pants and shirts, felt a little more tired, woke up thinking about going to bed again that night. Evenings were spent “relaxing” in front of some screen with my little friend in a glass….and snacks…by the bag.
I knew in the back of my mind that I wasn’t right. Told myself that this is what happens to people in their thirties with my responsibilities, family and career. I actually had not looked in the mirror in over a year…I had let myself get to 204 lbs, for a 5’11” frame.
Then one morning my 8 year old daughter came in our bed to sleep next to me and asked if I could move my belly out of her way…..I knew I couldn’t keep lying to myself and to my family this way and had to change something for my and their sake.
So, knowing I had always performed and succeeded best when put in front a real challenge, I went ahead and became a beachbody member and started Insanity on March 12th 2012…my wife’s birthday. Told her had decided to do something and to not let my give up or accept any excuse until I had completed the program. Her support has been invaluable.
This Insanity thing was HARD. I must have spent the first weeks of Insanity mostly huffing and puffing, while the dvd played on…..but I kept at it. Followed the diet plan at five 300 calorie meals a day, including daily Shakeology and Results & Recovery Formula. The second fit test confirmed that my efforts were paying off. Nothing great, but improvements were made. So I kept pushing play everyday, even with a very irregular schedule. I would sometimes workout in the morning, sometimes before bed, before a night shift…..but always gave it all I had, digging as deep as I could that day.
I weighed myself on the first day and on the last, May 13th, my 36th birthday. Insanity had taken 34 pounds off! I felt great, had lots more energy, slept better, went from around 26% body fat to around 14%. Awesome!
But I was bothered by what to do now. Going back to “normal” sure was not an option. And I wanted to get some muscle on my bones…..but I never could stand going to gyms.
P90X was my answer, but I had many questions about the diet plan, the calories, the choices, the portion plan, etc…
I found Team Ripped and the answers to most of my questions. Thank you Wayne Wyatt! I really learned how to dial in my nutrition and track everything. I decided to go ahead with P90X, but after the first week realized that I missed the intensity of the Insanity cardio workouts. So I switched over to Coach Wayne’s P90X/Insanity Hybrid. Did it on fat shredder 1900 calories for 4 weeks and got all the way down to 6% body fat! Then I switched to energy booster and had to increase all the way to 2800 calories to stop from losing weight.
The motivation and accountability never wavered, I pushed play everyday, did my best, forgot the rest, brought it, dug deeper. When I had questions, Team Ripped and Coach Wayne had the answers. My wife and kids were (and remain) as supportive as can be. My kids (9, 7 and 4 years old) sometimes work out with me at 6 AM!
This journey has gotten from 204lbs and unhealthy to 154lbs, 6% body fat, and in the best shape I have ever been in. It has tought me the joys of life again. It has shown me the importance and benefits of a clean dedicated diet.
It has also tought me that fitness is not a goal to achieve, it is a lifestyle to enjoy and pursue. My wife is now accompanying my on her own journey, and I am continuing on, without fear or doubts. This is for real. This is for life. I’ll send in my P90X2 results to keep you updated.
Bring it!
