Getting back to some Where are they now? posts this week! Today we get to catch up with David J. David is a close friend of mine that has been with teamRIPPED for a long time. You might remember him from the Asylum Challenge and if you are in any teamRIPPED Challenge Group you are sure to know him. So let’s see what’s up with David!

What’s up with David J.

David first came to teamRIPPED when he was doing P90X. He went on to tackle the Asylum Challenge and never stopped bringing it. You might even remember he did a CrossFit experiment for teamRIPPED a couple years back. You can check out his Asylum HOF post HERE with all the crazies.

So David how old are you? Just to give people some reference.

30 (I know… not old at all!)

When did you first join teamRIPPED?

I first joined Team RIPPED after seeing your YouTube video and reaching out for help with nutrition when I was doing P90X. I had done a round of P90X on my own but didn’t get ripped. I was amazed that you replied to my email LOL Then I took part in the Asylum challenge and was hooked. It’s been over 4 years of teamRIPPED now!

What program did you use to get your results?

My first program was P90X. It still holds a special place in my heart. I don’t think there is anything better for all around fitness in what Beachbody offers. You just can’t beat the original! Then I rolled right into The Asylum Vol 1.

What are you doing now with your fitness?

Right now I am in the Year of the Beast and doing a hybrid of a powerlifting program from Jonnie Candito and Body Beast. Another teamRIPPED guy Jeff Lennon came up with the hybrid and it has been great. I actually haven’t been this motivated to workout and train in a long time!

How have your goals changed since your first transformation?

Yes, a lot. For my first transformation, I was set on getting ripped. And I did that. I got down below 6% BF and shredded. Over time, I have added some mass with Body Beast and other work, but I struggled with wanting to stay lean while doing it. At this point, I have decided not to care as much about BF. I’m not going to go crazy but my main goal is strength. I have always liked being strong and feel I’m pretty strong for my size. I just want to maximize my strength and see what I can do! That is where this Candito program has been great. I love squatting, deadlifting, and benching… so Candito and Beast give me a lot of that!

How do you view working out now? Tell me all about it.

I have been locked in with workouts since I started in Feb 2011. I have had injuries along the way but I have never stopped working out. It is definitely part of my life. I think as I look at it now I am trying to focus on what working out will allow me to do outside of my gym. I want to be strong to be resistant to injury and be active for my kids. I like knowing I can do a lot around the house and can often do it by myself. Working out has made me more independent for sure. Finally, I workout to connect with my friends. Some of my closest friends are through Beachbody (you being one of them Wayne LOL) and I love that this is what connects us. We get to cheer each other on, push for bigger goals, and just stay accountable. Working out is definitely a community thing, even if it is mainly online.

Awesome! And I agree about the community. It’s pretty amazing. Have you ever gain weight back since your transformation?

Hasn’t everyone LOL I have had good weight gains and ones I would say are bad. What I think is encouraging though is even my “bad” eating now is nowhere near what it was before teamRIPPED. I may miss some days tracking but I don’t go crazy like I used to. I also do a lot of self-balancing throughout the day. I am really good about knowing if I am going to go out to eat for example, I will have a really small breakfast to just balance it out. I would have never done that before. I also stop when I am full more often instead of pushing it LOL I sit around 175-180 without much work and when I get lean I get down to 165-170. All depends on the time of year and goals. Right now I am maintaining at 175 just trying to build strength and maybe change my body comp really slowly.

Big question, what is your WHY then and now? Has it changed?

My WHY is my family and those around me. I want to be a good example and help as many people as I can. My wife is hooked on Beachbody too and I love that our kids get to see a healthy example. We will be super active parents and plug into everything they plug into. It has helped so much nutritionally. We just don’t really do junk, so the kids don’t know any difference. They love fruit, veggies, meat, etc. Lots of whole food due to some food allergies but really good stuff. I love getting to coach people and help them see how rewarding this journey is. You have so much power to change where you are headed. You just have to truly commit. That commitment is hard for a lot of people, but once it clicks… man is it awesome!
Thanks David for catching up with us! Check out his first transformation video below.
