Brock was always very active and athletic in high school, but at age 30, he looked back and wondered what had happened. He’s a worship pastor, and he knew that he wanted to be a better reflection of the Lord in the way he cared for himself and his health. He also wanted to set the right example for his son. His video says it all! He’s now making the most of what God has given him!
Brock’s Story in his own words:
In August of 2010 I found myself frustrated with where I was, wondering why it had gotten that way, giving up on making any progress. My mental toughness when it came to fitness was beaten down…everything seemed impossible. Life had not always been that way:
My background in high school and college was always activity. I played baseball and football through high school at the Texas 5A level, intramural ball of any kind (soccer/volleyball/basketball)in college, worked as an outdoor guide kayaking and rock climbing for Texas A&M University, and coordinated the Rec Sports program for Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, TX. In 2003 I got married and started masters work which put me working and reading a lot, both of which I did sitting down. I went from 175 lbs. (which was starving college weight) to 220 in about a year. I am 6’1″ so 220-225 never looked ridiculous on my frame, but I was just unhealthy. Then my son, Joshua, was born in 2008…I started realizing how inactive I had become.
I now serve as Worship Pastor at Alsbury Baptist Church in Burleson, TX (alsburybaptist.com). Close to 30, my life needed to change. The offering I was making to God in my body had to be different. I wanted to be used by him for service, as an example as a father, and as a husband. August 20, 2010 I started P90X with some great friends. My goals were to run with my son, feel great and to be ready for the youth camps, kids camps, and mission projects that I have opportunity to attend. We began hitting the workouts hard, but I have never been good at early mornings, good sleep patterns, or changing eating habits for the long term. So, I brought it every morning at 5:30am which made me get up 3 to 4 hours earlier than I normally did for church office hours. I did not attempt a nutrition change at all the first 90 days. Something in the back of mind kept nagging that I would fail. That this was just impossible for someone like me. Somewhere around day 70, I figured out that I was becoming a different person…5:30 was not torture any more, I was up and going before my kiddo and got to hug him first thing. I felt idle at home and cleaned and worked at times that I would normally have said “I need to sit for a bit and unwind.” Which brings us to when I found my Beachbody coach.
I had not taken the accountability and encouragement opportunity seriously. Through the first 90 days my weight was virtually unchanged. My heart and lungs felt better, I was a bit stronger, but visually I was the same guy. The mental accomplishment of finishing a round had changed my perspective and I was ready for the next chapter. My coach helped me get there!
On Nov. 29th I started P90X for real…as a different dude! I tackled a calorie deficient eating plan with emphasis on the right percentages of proteins, carbs, and fats. I talked with my coach regularly. The results started to exponentially take shape. Body fat started melting off and a passion ignited in me to make this body an excellent offering to my God, to help my friends and family find success in their health that had never been attained before, and to help others along a journey that is life-changing.
Seeing that there was a better way and knowing that the passion to follow Christ applies to everything I do, made taking care of my body fresh and important in a new way to me. My son knows where I am in the mornings and shows me his jumping jacks with a sparkle in his eye everyday. People are drawn to my transformation, asking how to get started. Eat right, bring it everyday, and you WILL see change. I want to help you get there!
