Kris K.’s Story and P90X3 Results

Finding Purpose in the Pain.

To start, I come from an overweight family. I was the fat kid growing up. When I was 15, I weighed 240 pounds. I can still remember the embarrassment of taking my shirt off to go swimming or to get changed for gym class. I can remember running around with my friends and they would be able to climb a fence or jump over things with ease while I was left with finding a way around. As I grew up, I did lose a little weight when my interest in girls started to take over life, haha. I can still remember when I got just under 200 pounds. It was a happy day. How did I do that? Well, it wasn’t the healthy way. It was mostly due to just eating once a day a.k.a. starving myself. After that, I met my now wife, and my weight has gone up and down since. I lost my “why” for a while.

Then my world changed. My wife and I brought a baby into the world. Suddenly life wasn’t about me anymore. Your entire being, mind and energy are focused on this beautiful new life. I thought at last I have a REAL reason. I have a real “why”. I knew I needed to change my ways and be here for this little girl for a long time to come. So I started with a Beachbody program I saw the infomercial for called P90X. I dedicated my all to it. I showed up everyday, even the days I would have rather been doing anything else. I gave it 100%. I got amazing results as well. I went from 198 lbs to 158 lbs in 90 days! I looked great and I felt amazing. I hadn’t weighed that little since I was probably 12 or 13. I kept pushing play with different Beachbody programs for about a year. Then life happened… I started a new career that was working me 12 hours plus a day on the opposite schedule I had been on for years. I took my eye off the goal. I lost my “why” again! Shortly after, my wife and I had our second child. Literally, in the same week our son was born, I started at a new company. When we do change, we do it big! LOL I would like to say I found my motivation, my “why” again, but sadly I didn’t. I fell completely off the wagon for years. I was trying to figure out how to be a daddy to two babies. On top of that, I was working a ton of hours. All the while switching from 1st to 3rd shift again! I admit- life got the better of me. You know how they say time flies as you get older? Well, there has never been a more true statement! I look up and my daughter is 6 and my son is 3! What happened? Where did the time go?

One day I start scrolling through my old pictures on my phone and I came across some of my result pictures from P90X. I had to take a hard look in the mirror (it was hard to see). All the evidence is there. “Look how far you have fallen.” I was back up to my original starting weight of P90X. 198lbs. I felt like crap. I was tired all the time. I had not been giving my relationships my all. I had not been giving the kids the attention they deserve. I felt like I had been in a rut for years. “Just going through the motions.” I really felt like I was on the verge of depression.

I knew I had to change. I knew I would never be able to get this time back with my family. I still work a ton of hours, and I’m still on thirds. But I had been using that as an excuse for years, and look where it got me. I got serious again. This time my wife joined me. She has been a huge motivation for me. We nailed down the nutrition. We both started P90X 3 (because it’s only a half hour) and we did it all the way through. And guess what? We got amazing results again! I’m down to 170 and 9.9% body fat! My wife is a different story, she is naturally skinny so she wanted to build muscle, and that’s exactly what she did.

Are we special? No. If we can do it, anyone can. Trust me. I truly believe it’s a mental game more than anything. You have to find your “why”. It doesn’t matter what it is. It certainly can change over time, and it may need to. The key is consistency. You have to consistently make the choice to be better than you were yesterday. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Don’t beat yourself up if you’re not perfect right away. You didn’t get out of shape in one day, and you certainly will not get into shape in one day. Just show up. Choose to be the best version of you, and enjoy the journey!
