Wayne’s Story

Before P90X, I was “fluffy” (my kids’ term for it). I bounced between 255 and 270 lbs.  I was out of shape and overweight. I had all the convenient excuses (busy job, lots of kids, church activities) to justify why I didn’t have time to take care of my body. I also figured that at my age, with full shoulder and knee reconstruction from sports injuries, that I was simply “over-the-hill” and that an active, super-fit lifestyle wasn’t still in the cards for me. I wasn’t taking good care of the body God blessed me with, and it showed. What’s more, I was setting a poor example for my family. My poor example was not setting my kids up for success with their own fitness and nutrition.
….. Then, I gave P90X a try ……  In just 90 days of total commitment, it all changed! My body changed, my energy level changed, and my attitude changed.  I got ripped! I went from 23% body fat to just 8% in 90 days. I even surprised myself with how much my body changed in 90 days. My transformation has gotten a TON of attention, both on YouTube, the P90X website, and even the infomercial!  I’ve gotten so much feedback and questions about my P90X experience (what worked, what didn’t, what supplements did I use, what did my diet look like, how did I stay so motivated, etc.) that I decided to start my own coaching site, teamRIPPED.com, to answer questions, give advice, and help others achieve the kind of success I had.  As I’ve continued with P90X, Insanity, Asylum, and P90X2, my body fat has actually dropped even lower (in the 6% range) and I’ve gained muscle by maximizing the workouts, nutrition, and supplements.  See for yourself in my updated transformation video below — “The Sequel”!

My faith played a huge role in my motivation and commitment to transform myself.  I always knew my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, but I wasn’t treating it like one. I realized it was time to make a change.  This is not how I wanted to look or feel.  P90X was my answer!  And WOW, did it ever work!  P90X and these other awesome home workout programs are now the way I steward and care for the body God has blessed me with.  It’s not about 90 days anymore – it’s the new me!

My parents always taught me that I should surround myself with the kind of people I want to be like.  That’s why when I started P90X, I chose a coach who demonstrated commitment to the program, integrity, discipline, and an expertise in nutrition, supplements, and motivation.  I knew I needed a coach who would encourage me and hold me accountable on my 90 day journey.  I am a former college football player, and I know just how important a great coach is to getting the most out of his/her players.  Needless to say, I achieved great success by following in the footsteps of my coach who had achieved the kind of success I wanted for myself.

As far as nutrition, I ate clean … SUPER CLEAN!  I never allowed myself cheat meals, because it can take 2-3 days of clean eating just to get back to where you are before that cheat meal.  Trust me, that fried food and dessert is NOT worth it!  And this isn’t easy for me to say.  Before P90X, I drank pop for breakfast, always had a bag of candy in the car for my drive to and from work, and ate whatever my belly told me it wanted for lunch.  That’s why I looked the way I did on Day 1!  But by committing to the nutrition plan, using the right kind of supplements to fuel my body in a clean and healthy manner, and never giving in to my sweet tooth, I was able to achieve extraordinary results on P90X.

As for the workouts, this is where the blood, sweat, and tears come in!  I BROUGHT IT every day!  If the kids kept me up the night before … I BROUGHT IT!  If work was super stressful that day … I BROUGHT IT!  If we were on vacation … I BROUGHT IT!  You’ve got to decide ahead of time that you won’t let obstacles knock you off track.  Push play every day.  PERIOD!  Plus, these workouts are simply genius!  They force me out of my comfort zone by mixing cardio, resistance, balance, and stretching.  I knew that if I stuck with the workouts and pushed play every day these workouts would transform my body.  And they did!  I can’t even imagine going to a gym anymore.  P90X, Insanity, and Tony Horton One-on-Ones are better than any workout I’ve ever done (and remember, I’m a former college football player who spent hours in the gym when I was playing).  I stimulate my body more in just 1 hour, in the comfort of my living room, than I used to in a 3 hour weightlifting workout.  These Beachbody workouts really are THAT GOOD!!  My entire transformation was fueled by nothing more than Beachbody – no outside lifting, no outside running, no outside swimming, no outside cycling, etc.  This does it all!

  4. JR says:

    Coach Wayne,

Greetings from Dallas, TX. I wanted to say that you are an absolute inspiration and your pictures and videos are my motivation.

I am on my 2nd round of P90X/Insanity hybrid. It’s fun, it’s challenging, however my results are incredibly SLOW!!! I am losing an average of 1/4 of an inch a week. I weigh 210, I stand 5’11.5.” I started with a 40″ waist and am now tapping 37 1/4.” I haven’t lost any weight, but I mostly blame that on “so so” eating habits. I “try” to eat healthy, i.e. chicken, fish, yada yada yada. But I travel for work and 4 days out of the week I am up at 3:30 in the morning and am too tired to make a healthy breakfast; or I come home too late (mostly around 8ish, yes I pull in major hours on the road.) And by the time I get close to home I’m so tired and drained that I can’t think straight and go to a fast food joint and order the first thing that catches my eye, which is almost always bad!

My recovery formula mostly consisted of chocolate milk, or skim milk with a banana. I did some research and found several peer reviewed studies on choco milk vs other recovery formulas, but that’s a different subject.

Anyway, I want to drop down to 180ish and finally get those elusive abs that I’ve been killing myself over for.

Obviously I’m doing a serious disservice to my athletic goals with the crummy eating habits. I’m just afraid I’ve done so much damage that my body has grown accustomed to what I do and I fear I am forever stuck in this rut no matter what I change, diet or workouts.

I need some serious guidance and little push to move forward. Any advice will help. Thanks… : )

  5. Coach Wayne says:

Hey JR! Glad you like the site!

So reading between the lines here, you are telling me you work out hard but your eating habits suck. Your results (or lack of results) are exactly in line with that as well. I’ve said it a million times — nutrition is 80% of the results. Until you commit to the nutrition, your results won’t improve much. You aren’t in a rut. You just need to step it up and give the nutrition a much better effort!! You can do this!

  6. JR says:

    Coach Wayne,

I express an infinite amount of thank yous. You are the Carlos Santana of P90X; legendary, epic and down right powerful!

I’ve actually been using P90X and Insanity off and on for the last couple of years. I had a good meal plan that I followed and lost some weight. It was back and knee injuries that forced me to constantly quit early. So it’s been a constant battle with losing and gaining weight. It got depressing and I quit for 2 months.

It wasn’t until recently that I combined the two programs hoping that if I made it tougher surely my results would show. Man o’ man was I sorely mistaken.

But I will heed your advice, get back up, shake the dust off and push forward. Maybe now I can beat my depression by following a good nutrition plan continue my exercises and finally get to your status of fitness!

  7. Coach Wayne says:

Sounds great JR! Keep me posted on your progress bro!

  8. Charlie says:

Hi there coach wayne, quick question and it’s actually a stupid one. Have you noticed if you’ve been turning heads after your success, especially with the ladies? I know you are happily married, but I’m sure ladies have done a double take and maybe even gawked. But have seen that or are you just so busy that you are oblivious to that kind of attention?

Please don’t take any offense to this, I don’t mean to come off as a DB.

  9. Coach Wayne says:

LOL Charlie, I honestly don’t even notice. I’m happily married, and most of the time have my crew of kids in tow so I don’t think ladies even notice the fact that I’m in shape (which is perfectly fine with me). I’m not trying to impress anyone other than my wife … and of course teamRIPPED nation LOL!

  10. JR says:

    Coach Wayne,

So I did some research and this is what I came up with, please let me know what you think.

I’m gonna continue my P90X/Hybrid program. However, on lifting days I’m going a little fast paced for better fat burn. For example, on Chest and Back, rather than do traditional push ups on my feet, I’m going to do them on my knees. This way I’m able to pump a few more push ups per set and am also able to push a bit faster. This will enable my heart to shoot higher for some added light cardio and I’ll be able to break a nice sweat.

Finally, on my nutrition, most of my diet will consist of fruit and vegetable smoothies, probably about 90% of it. I did this 4 years ago and lost 50 pounds in 3 months along with moderate exercise. I continued to do it off and on since then. But a severe MMA back injury kept me from working out and I gained all 50 pounds plus a bit more right back. I gave up on trying, hence my depression.

I don’t want to consume too much protein, just enough to maintain what I have and move the scale numbers down. So greek yogurt snacks and some chicken or fish for dinner should be enough.

I weigh 210 and my doc wants me down to 180ish, no more than 185 to release me from Lisinopril.

So anyway, that’s my plan. What do you think? Or is there something else you recommend to help me reach my goals. Much obliged… : )

  11. Coach Wayne says:

Hey JR, that plan sounds just fine. Stick to it and you should see great results.

  12. JR says:

Thanks coach, healh first and ripped abs later,LOL!

And dang it, I can’t believe I found a typo. I meant P90X/Insanity hybrid. I was an English major in college and I could get razzed if people in my circles new of this, LOL!

Yes yes I’m a 30 year old nerd, but with your recent blessings and my new plan, I’ll be a healthy and later a sexy nerd, WOOHOO!!!

Thanks again coach, I already have you booked marked on my phone and I’ll be joining your team shortly!

  13. cw says:

  14. Coach Wayne says:

Thanksgiving with no cheats! Way to go CW! You are teamRIPPED through and through! :-)

  15. abraham delacruz says:

Hey there coach wayne I had a question I wanted to ask you. I’m 16 and I just started my 3rd month of p90x and I haven’t seen any major results, I’ve been pushing play every day and stuck to the nutrition plan. Is it because of my age? Any tips?

  16. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Abraham, it’s not because of your age. People of any age can get great results with P90X. When you say you haven’t seen any major results, what do you mean? Do you have a lot of body fat that hasn’t come off? Are you very thin and haven’t seen much muscle gain? So much of the results are tied to dialing in the nutrition to meet your goals. I’d have to know where you are at now, what you are doing on the nutrition, and I’d need to see what progress you’ve made so far to be able to give you good advice.

Also, be sure you’ve read my articles “dialing it in”, “round 1 nutrition”, and “the P90X nutrition guide” because without a doubt most people who aren’t getting the kind of results they want are not putting in the kind of effort on their nutrition that it takes to get max results.

  17. abraham delacruz says:

Thanks coach. I read your articles “dialing it in” and “round 1 nutrition” and they helped me with some of the questions I had. And wat I mean is that most people start seeing there abs and muscles more by the 3rd month, but I haven’t been able to see those types of results yet. But I think if I focus more on my nutrition like you said ill start seeing those types of results. Ill also be making a before and after video as soon as I’m done.

  18. Thomas says:

Coach Wayne was your first round of p90x the lean program or the traditional program? Those results were amazing but I think it has to do with your history in football and the muscle you already had. Its tough going into the program with not much muscle to speak of, I’m more of a blob than “fluffy”. Do you have any tips for someone trying to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. Obviously the muscle tone wont be optimal because of the fat loss goal, but I like lifting weights and doing cardio and abs every other day doesn’t sound as fun as weight lifting.

  19. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Thomas, I always recommend Classic. Read here for details of why = http://teamripped.com/p90x-schedule.

While I did play football, I highly doubt that had anything to do with my results (other than the fact that I knew how to work hard and give 110%). I hadn’t lifted in 14 years, so it’s not like I was just coming off a season or anything LOL! I do believe body type has a role though. Read here for details on that = http://teamripped.com/can-i-look-like-you

And as for gaining muscle and losing fat, read this = http://teamripped.com/big-ripped-or-small-ripped

Hope those help! Remember, as you have other questions, just type your words in the “search” field and you’ll see all the articles I’ve written about that subject. I’ve been writing articles for a long time so chances are, I’ve answered it :-)

  20. JR says:

    Dr. Wyatt,

Lol, hey coach how are things? I didn’t know you were a physician until probably 1 hour ago when I was reading some of your articles.

I too work in the medical field, ophthalmology to be exact, and am currently working on my science pre-reqs for med school. I’ve been in the field for over 11 years and feel it’s time to step it up a notch, LOL!

With that said, I wanted to ask you something. Going through college was tough enough, but now that I’ll soon be applying for med school, I know I’ll be looking at some regular sleepless nights. With classes, labs and study halls, I know I’m looking at an average of 12+ hours of work. I want to keep my P90X/Insanity hybrid, but I don’t want to sacifice my prospective results due to stress levels and possible lack of sleep.

Having gone through med school yourself, what do you recommend for someone who will be working hard for a medical degree and wants to work hard to keep in shape.

    Thank you Dr. Wyatt…

  21. Coach Wayne says:

Hey JR, there is no reason you can’t get it done. We all have busy schedules. We make time for what is important to us. Workout first thing in the morning and you’ll always know that you get your workout in before you head out to classes. Read my article “my schedule” and you’ll see that while I’m done with school, I still have a pretty long day every day but it doesn’t stop me from getting my workout in every day.

Good luck in med school man!

  22. Josh says:

Hey Coach i just recently started p90x and i just finished my first week and i was wanting to know did you follow the nutrition guide exactly and did you just do the classic version to get so ripped. I want to be cut and big like you just wondering what you did. Thanks

  23. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Josh, way to get through that first week! Yes, I did Classic. To understand how I maximized the nutrition, read my articles “round 1 nutrition” and “the P90X nutrition guide”.

    Keep bringing it!

  24. Josh says:

Hey coach i am wondering how big are your arms.. they look HUGE!

  25. Coach Wayne says:

They are LOL! Nearly 2 years of P90X will do that to you :-).

  26. Josh says:

Hey coach seen you in p90x 2 on youtube and just gotta say wow that looks really hard and congrats on being in the best fitness program ever!!

  27. Coach Wayne says:

Thanks Josh! Yeah that workout OWNED me LOL! It was a good one to be in!

  28. Armand says:

Hey coach Wayne, I got to tell you that you are a monster, I saw your video on YouTube and I got really inspired, I’m going to start P90X next week, though I don’t have the resources to buy supplements, do you think I might still see satisfactory changes in my body with out them? By the way is there a way you could coach me via FaceBook?

  29. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Armand, read my article “why supplement”. It answers that question for you.

And if you like using FB, that’s fine. I have a teamRIPPEDcom page on FB you can plug into. And to join up with our team and make me your coach, just click the “join our team” tab at the top of the screen.

    Bring it!

  30. azif says:

    hey coach wayne,
ur video is my main motivation towards p90x its so great and will also motivate many to p90x….thanks a lot

  31. alex says:

Hey Coach Wayne, My name’s Alex I’m 21 years old, 6ft tall and about 320lbs. I’ve been over weight just about as long as I can remember. I would always tell myself I’m going to start losing weight in a week so I have time to “get ready”. Then that week would come and I would have forgotten all about it. I’ve told myself I would start losing weight since early high school. Occasionally I would see an infomercial on TV (mainly p90x) and I would think OK it’s time but by the next morning I had forgotten that I even thought about losing weight. For me the biggest problem is that I’ve adapted to being heavy. I’m use to eating big meals, soda all day, and eating pretty much a meal right before I go to bed. Thus every morning I wake up feeling like crap from eating all that junk the day before. Finally I reached a point where I’m tired of the ” I will’s or I’m too out of shape to even make the effort”. My only problem is financially.
I have the basic tools at hand but my real problem is being able to supplement my own meals without having to eat what my parents buy. They’re both over weight but don’t have the support from one another to do anything about it. I told myself I’m young and I need to do something about this now for my future life, my future kids, and for me “now”. Also I hope that if I can lose weight and get healthy I can effect my parents lifestyle as well. I’ve seen people over 400 lbs able to lose weight and look great so I told myself why can’t I? NO more excuses, I plan to buy power 90 as my entrance way into the fitness and health world. Then move on to things such as p90x etc. My only main concern is changing the way I eat. I can cut out all sodas, teas, and just drink water for the most part I mean it’s EVERYWHERE and most of the time if not bottled it’s free. My main concern is cost effective and healthy meals. I am currently looking into getting a better job where I can make some more money to fuel my hunger for a healthy life. So in the end my main thing I would like to say is Thank’s… not for having a great body to motivate me, not for showing how to eat or diet, not for showing that fitness videos work. But thank you for what you did for you’re family and thank you for showing so many people that its not just high school athletes that can do this later in life (of course you were but that’s no the reason you lost weight) you lost weight because of dedication and faith in yourself. That’s what I thank you for the most. Thank you for showing that the main tools to live a healthy lifestyle are so simply to have motivation, dedication, and believe that you can do it.

  32. Coach Wayne says:

Awesome testimonial Alex! I can’t wait to see you reach your goals! We are here for you all the way. Stay plugged in with us cuz it’s not easy and you’ll face resistance from others as you change. Stay strong!

  33. Stephen says:

    Hey coach wayne!

My name is Stephen and i’m 18 years old. I weigh around 135 lb so i’m rather skinny and i’ve been working on changing that. i did 2 rounds of p90x classic but i didn’t gain any weight. in fact i lost a few, and with baseball starting up again i’ll be doing alot of cardio. i was wondering if you know of any modified p90x routines that cuts out most of the cardio? if you do that would be great. Thanks

  34. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Stephen, the key to building muscle isn’t to necessarily remove the cardio from P90X (since PlyoX is really the only hard cardio day of the whole week), but rather to dial in your nutrition so that you can gain muscle. Look at my “dialing it in” article and my “bulking diet” in the nutrition zone. That will help. Keep bringing it!

  35. Ken says:

Hey Coach Wayne!!! I just joined your team and my wife and I are so excited to reach our fitness goals with you and your wife as our coaches! I look forward to hearing from you and some of your views to some questions I emailed you earlier…! Thanks and God Bless!

  36. Kenny W says:

    Hey Coach,

I joined the team yesterday after stumbling across your success story a few days ago. I am on day 11. I made a nutrition plan based off of research I had found before I found this website and it is remarkably similar to all the nutrition info you have put on here. All of your tips and recommendations seem to be spot on so I think this is the team for me.
I was curious if you had any day 30 or 60 photos. I think it would be interesting to see how you progressed through the program. This is by far the best website I have come across so if not you have already given more than enough to help me get motivated for a life change.

    Thanks,
    Kenny

  37. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Kenny, yes, I’ve posted my day 30 and 60 photos in the article called “seeing results?” if you want to check that out. Glad you joined us and keep bringing it man!!

  38. Jon Belnap says:

I just want to send a note to thank you for the videos. I was new to the whole Beachbody site and to P90X. I saw your youtube video before I bought the program. Seeing your transformation and your story gave me the faith I needed to proceed with the purchase.

I am now over 15 days into my classic program and I now cannot even come up with an excuse to not bring it. My garage has become a “no excuse” zone…I love to “Bring it” daily. I also truly appreciate your site and the wealth of knowledge here…THANKS!!

  39. Coach Wayne says:

Awesome Jon! Thanks for the kind words man! Keep bringing it!!!

  40. Thomas says:

Hi Coach Wayne, a question: When you did your very first P90X workout, how long did it take you to finish it? I imagine people trying this are initially so out of shape that the first hour at Tony’s intensity level is impossible to do. What did you to for say the first week of workouts?

  41. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Thomas, that first workout took me a good hour and a half LOL. I’ve written an article called “struggling” that addresses that, but basically we all have to start somewhere and the point isn’t how out of shape we are when we start. The point is to show up every day and push play. And I we will do that, we get better and better every time.

    Good question! Keep bringing it!

  42. Peacock says:

    Wayne,

Time for you to start doing Crossfit.

  43. Coach Wayne says:

Why would I want to lose the progress I’ve gained by dropping down to Crossfit? No way! I’m having too much fun being a shredded superhero to my family! :-)

  44. Hernan Aguilera says:

Hey coach, I notice you workout early in the a.m which is something I’m gonna have to start due to a change in work schedule. I was wondering if you work out on an empty stomach with just the pre workout before. How effective can this be to gain muscle assuming you did lift routines and proper nutrition the rest of the day? I’m just worried I will lose muscle while working out in a fastening state.

  45. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Hernan, you can do it either way. I’ve done it both ways. I typically still go on an empty stomach and I’ve obviously had no problem with muscle :-)

    Here’s the article I wrote about it = http://teamripped.com/work-out-on-an-empty-stomach

  46. Ryan says:

    Hi Coach Wayne,

I will be starting the p90x journey this Monday. I’m from the UK and i was reading your articles on shakeology, i cant seem to find any shops to purchase this from, nor can i find any uk websites. Can you recommend any alternatives?

  47. Coach Wayne says:

Hey Ryan, due to customs regulations, Shakeology is not available in the UK at this time. Sorry!!

  48. Ryan says:

    Coach Wayne,

I thought that, is there any alternatives i can take? or should i just stick to my protein shakes and recovery drinks?

Great transformation btw, If i achieve half of what you have, i’d be amazed!!

  49. Coach Wayne says:

Yes Ryan, stick to what you are doing buddy! Thx!

  50. Larrick says:

Wayne, you sold me. I bought in and joined Team Ripped yesterday. You are right us “big guys” do look to you for example of what can be done. I look forward to contacting you and receiving the help and motivation I need to turn this body I have now into the best me in 90 days and beyond.
