So we already talked about what it takes to build a home gym for Beachbody programs. The awesome thing about BB is that you don’t need tons of equipment. You can get world class workouts, change your whole life, get shredded with almost nothing. As I wrote about, I would start with adjustable dumbbells, a pull up bar, and push up stands. You can see the results I got with just that!

Growing Your Home Gym

As this becomes a lifestyle, many of the people on teamRIPPED have found out we have a passion for this. We want to keep adding to our gym so we can do more, keep it fresh, and stay motivated. That is exactly what I did! Lifting and working out is my hobby. I’m not playing golf, I’m not going hunting, etc… I love fitness!

So as your gym grows, most people pick a dedicated space to have their gym. Maybe the basement, an extra bedroom, or even like me in an extra stall of the garage. Having some space will let you add more gear, keep it out and ready, and give you a little retreat for working out. My garage is MY SPACE. I love it!

Equipment for Your Growing Home Gym

In no particular order, this is what I would add to your dumbbells, pull up bar, and push up stands.

An Adjustable Bench

Most of us added this with the addition of Body Beast! You can complete Body Beast with a stability ball (Sagi shows you how) but over time you will want a bench to be able to push heavier and heavier weights.

I started with a Powerblock bench from Beachbody. They worked out an agreement with Powerblock and offered that bench at a great price (I think it was $150 for coaches – maybe even including shipping – I can’t remember). It was super stable and did an awesome job!

Another good option is the Bowflex 5.1. It offers many different incline options, just like the PB bench, and is very affordable too.

If you want the CADILLAC of all benches… head over to Rogue Fitness and look up their bench. Very pricey but a tank. You will pass it on to your children in their inheritance LOL

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A BENCH? – Good weight rating – Adjustable Angles of Incline – Stability (try it out at the store if you can)

EZ BAR

Here’s another Beast addition, the EZ bar. If you have done Beast you know how much you can do with an EZ bar and weights. I think the best thing about getting an ez bar is that you can add a lot more weight without dropping a lot of $$$ on bigger dumbbells. It definitely lets you push harder for a great prices.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN AN EZ BAR – Here I would pass on BB’s EZ bar, nothing wrong with it, I just wish it was a real Olympic size. Go for Olympic weights. Check out craigslist for the best deals – very easy to find good, used weights.

ACCESSORIES

Long list here, but this is really what I went after as I built out my gym. So much to do with these items! If you have done P90X2 (which you all should!) you might have some of these!

  1. Foam Roller – get loose, stay mobile. If you subscribe to BOD, try X2: Recovery & Mobility this week and thank me later LOL
  2. Med Balls – 4 is best for X2. But I have liked having a pair of 8 or 10s and then a pair of 12s. Amazon sells them at a good price.
  3. Weight Vest! – Add more weight to your pull-ups and get that big, thick, wide back. Hands down, Weightvest.com is the best – 40# is the most I would get.
  4. Flooring – I use 4’x8′ HORSE STALL MATS. Any farm supply store will have them. They are 3/4″ thick and TOUGH. About 100# a piece but they will never need to be replaced.

So if you are here… you have a pretty sweet home gym! Check out next time when I talk about big ticket items: Squat Racks, Barbells, MORE WEIGHTS!
